Using the opening tagline "Jobs Flops at Macworld," TechTV tonight aired a live discussion between Phillip Schiller, vice president of worldwide product marketing for Apple, and Rick LePage, editor-in-chief and vice president of content for Macworld Magazine. The show was hosted by infamous columnist John Dvorak.

TechTV is retarded?

John Dvorak is pretty anti-mac, he was on his better behavior. But he's still a r*****, he's on cable TV afterall (though he could probably be on Springer, but that's another story). TechTV is the ghetto end of tech news.... all through the keynote, they kept interupting it with Jim Latterback. He kept saying "But they haven't said how much ram the Pentium 4 had" over and over and over, even though Jobs said clearly that both machines had equal specs in terms of memory etc..

Kinda hard to take the show seriously when 2 of their full time cast memembers are 3D renders and the others from Top 40 radio (ala Leo Laporte)

i can't believe "journalists", if you want to call them that, can get away with acting like this. you'd never read these sort of comments towards Gateway or Micron or some other PC manufacturer who have shown much worse performance as of late than dear Apple. Hang in there Apple, even if OS X pisses me off.

i watched

they ripped apple all keynote long. "nothing new" "still nothing to show us" "i give them a D-" and so on. I forgot how upset I was that the show sucked and started to hate this techtv show. The guy was an a**.

...is a PC-loving d***-licker. I saw him backstage with his lips planted firmly on Dvorak's ample arse. The way he likes it.

TechTV will not be considered seriously while they continue to allow Wintel Weenies like Louderback do the play-by-play at a Mac convention. Like having Gloria Allred report from the Playboy Mansion.

Still--the keynote was a disaster. Don't tell anybody.

TechTV Coverage

I watched the Keynote on TechTV. I handled the first interuption ok, but by the second and third time, I was over it.

The comments I heard on TechTV are an absolute insult. Seemed like some guys just basically kickin it talking about the Mac because they had to, and when you team two or three of them up, they start trying to out-do each other with the lasidasical clueless garbage that comes out of their mouths. I hope they're aware of just how many people bought into the negativity they dished out.

I'm sickened by this expectation that Apple needs to pull out a truckload of redesigned hardware, and one more things...every few months. Are we all really that bored? If it were up to me, I'd call it a day and shut down the whole computer hardware industry, because Apple has already created an ideal solution to serve mankind's intentions... But then there's that whole economy thing...

These armchair journalists have some serious emotional problems to work out. I hereby ask all of you opinionated individuals to put things in perspective before you go ranting negative garbage that only hurts the people that try so hard to create and use these tools.

They're Mad

That article has to be one of the most negative, dissapointing things I've read. They skip all the way back to when the iMac was introduced, and say whether Apple has lost its luster since. What an absolute load of c***. I'm so freakin' tired of these Wintel journalists (sponsored by Dell!) that force Apple's stock price up and down with their remarks. If anything, it just solidifies my belief that the Wintel monoploy has GOT TO BE BROKEN, and journalists like these need to wake the h*** up and realize that the entire internet, if they allow it, will be taken over by Gates and his Microsoft goones. I'm so passionate about this, so revved up, so MAD at what *may* be coming around the corner. God help us all.

I have never seen this show, but Dvorak's "columns" are well known to Mac Users for their epic stupidity.

The Mac Community does also need to realize, as the last poster stated, that Apple can't reinvent the industry every few months.

Last September, I installed OS X Public Beta on my powerbook to try it out. In March, when X was released, I was astonished at how much the OS had improved in six months. This September, 10.1 comes out, and it looks to be another giant improvement again.

In short, Apple's efforts, in my opinion have been phenomenal! Add in the TI powerbook, and the release only a few short weeks ago of the I-book, DVD authoring, and an incredibly easy software package to help burn your own DVDs ( I recently saw a demonstration at an Apple retailer where a Windows user said he had been through 3 machines in six months trying to get a DVD burned, none of them worked. Within an hour we had shot a short film, edited it quick and dirty with I Movie and the man had a DVD in his hand. Done. He bought a Mac on the spot.)

My point is, What the h*** do you people want? Apple has done phenomenal work, and all you keep saying is "That is soooo last week."

Any Apple employees reading this? Keep up the fantastic work! Even if I'm the only one who seems to appreciate it.

Oh, and BTW I find it hilarious, and yet somehow sad how many people keep referring to the new line as "slightly speed bumped." I have a DP 450, and it is wicked fast. I can't even comprehend how fast a dual 800 computer would be.

Appreciation

Yes, I appreciate what Apple has done and have appreciated it since 1976. That is not the point.

Anyone should be able to grasp the megahertz myth, I can and do. Yet, having said that, those blazing contests in Photoshop in which an 867MHz G4 beats a 1.whatever GHz Pentium 4 are not geared to my needs. How many apps do I rely on that use Altivec? None. I'd rather have the brute force power of an IBM PPC chip in the 1.4 GHz range, thank you. And while i stood in line Wednesday morning at 6:45 AM waiting to hear Steve speak, there were plenty of other people who voiced similar opinions, they are professionals (not in the graphics fields) who are in charge of purchasing decisions for their various companies.

And as regards OS X... just how long now have we waited for a "modern OS"? And how long has OS X been in development? I have been quite patient and am actually VERY pleased with OS 9.1... that is not the point. Apple must find a way to squeeze 48 hours of work into a 24 hour day in getting OS X right. 10.1 not being ready on keynote day is just not good enough.

Yes, you can blame Moto for being in violation of Moore's Law for some years now... that is not Apple's fault. But 10.1 not being ready for "keynote showtime" is not acceptable. Not at this late date. And that is Apple's domain of responsibility.

"Jobs Flops at Macworld" may have been the traffic-driving headline techtv.com used for that episode of Silicon Spin (h***, it got me to go to their site, and subsequently Tivo the show ; ) but I don't recall it ever being said on the actual show itself. It was actually quite a good discussion (and at no point made me want to put a brick through the TV, like the Louderback keynote "commentary" did). Dvorak was entertaining and even a bit self-deprecating -- explaining the problems they were having with lighting their studio (it looked like they were down to a single, bare bulb), Dvorak said it'd come as no surprise to the large group of people who always felt he was in the dark concerning the Mac. He also expressed bewilderment about Microsoft's dropping of Java in XP and their .NET plans.

Bottom line: Lousy web page headline, good television interview.

To the guy who isn't in graphics and wants a 1.4Ghz machine. What the h*** for!?!?! So you can launch MS Word in .5 seconds less? You said you're not in graphics so photoshop and Media Cleaner were useless demos for you, but remember a HUGE portion of mac users are creative professionals, and Apple pushes very strongly the idea of multimedia capabilities on a Mac. Of course you don't have to use graphics programs or media compression tools, but that's where speed really matters.

Decreasing a media cleaner pro compresison time by 80% from a 1.7Ghz PC is phenominal. Launching MSWord in .5 seconds less is not. Remember, the slowest part about a computer is YOU.

You say you understand the Megahertz Myth, but apparently not.

Hard to Please

As a Mac user, I accept that my standards are above the norm. As a Graphic Artist, I understand that my Mac is the tool of my trade.

What seems to be missed here is that this time last year, we were still stuck at 500Mhz for the G4. In January, we hit 466-733Mhz, and we were happy, now, in signs that things are back on track, we find ourselves just SIX MONTHS LATER with 733 at the low end of the equation, and yet, we complain. As a Mac user, I completely understand why we are complaining, but think about it - unless he unveiled something we weren't expecting, we would still be complaining. That's just the picky sort of people we are.

10.1 is phenominal, Dual 800? with the new G4 processors being used there, they will be over TWICE as fast as my paltry DP 533 (which uses the 7410). And still we b****...

iMac similarly received a bump from 400-600 to 500-700. Aside from missing Ruby, those colors are fine. Will they sell? of course, but it won't be in large numbers. I don't plan on buying an iMac, and I can't possibly complain on behalf of those users.

In the computer industry, 18 months is a long time, and we've seen the G4 go from 350-500Mhz, to 733-867. (PCs went from 800Mhz to 1.8Mhz in the same period, but ask any PC user how much they think the Pentium 4 sucks. Apple is doing great - they post profits when other computer makers are laying off employees. They have enough cash that if they froze all sales, we'd still have an Apple around in a few years. Want to be wowed at every show? go see a fricken musician. Boring as the keynote was, I see plenty to be happy about, and there's no place to go but up...

Do you work 16+ hours a day??? Now try working twice that, as you suggest, at 32 hours/day, or 4x a normal work day.

s**** YOU. Apple employees are people and if the damn OS isn't ready yet, just let them get it ready and then ship it. Apple never said there'd be an update to the OS at MacWorld, and nobody should hold them to that date.

It pisses me off to read someone who claims to "understand the Megahertz Myth" but then obviously doesn't because the whole point showed that the 800 G4 is faster than a 1.7Ghz P4, and that's NOT INCLUDING ALTIVEC. If you don't use graphics apps, what the h*** do you need more speed for???? Launching Outlook?

Go buy a freakin' PeeCee and then have fun when MS delays and delays their OS too and then when they ship it, it still sucks a**. But hey, at least you'll have 1.7Ghz, and I'll only be at dual 800's, so your goddamn pipeline can be longer and less efficient.

Any of you familiar with the situation of the over-achiever and under-achiever brothers? The under-achiever turns in his credit-card to his parents with a "C" and gets a pat on the back for passing. The over-achiever turns in a "B" and gets ridiculed for dropping a grade. This must be how Steve Jobs feels.

MacOS X is here and is the most advanced OS out there and is improving at an amazing rate. We have Powerbooks and Towers that beat the pants off of everything in the market. Yet, people complain that there wasn't something drastically "new" this time!

Oh, and in reference to the "1st Appreciation Guy" (face it, you asked for it), graphics doesn't rely so much on how many cycles your processor can spin. It's all about the graphics card and the interface it hooks up to (AGP, baby!). Altivec will also make a grand difference when you switch to MacOS X. As far as your job is concerned, the only company that is being slow and lackluster, is Adobe. (Didn't Adobe have a Carbon Photoshop demo last year? What happened to it?)

Keynote and Dvorak

The keynote was fine... all things considered. The rumor sites pump up expectations like they always do. Some of the mainstream media picks up on it... then the normal mac sites report on the news... such as 10.1 lcd imacs etc.

Two things to look at... LCDs are still expensive to put on sub 1000 machines. Your going have to pay for the trade off... something apple isn't willing to do. Second this the wrong time introduce a lcd imac model. Apple needs to release that before the school buying season (around may) or the consumer buying seasone (around november).

As for 10.1 long ago it was reported that 10.1 would not be released... no shock on that. Why no dvd support now well you saw it it still has bugs. Which is fine apple was just previewing the software. Even the best betas have problems.

What was the biggest fummble of the show the digital camera didn;t work and the keynote was a tad long with all the videos.

Dvorak praised apples line up... he loves the powerbook and he loved the cube... he asked schiller if you could get a deal and pick one up. It was a fine so for all the problems they had in the studio.

Jim Louderback... I can;t stand the dude never could and the keynot caped it off with the "benchmarket" stuff we don;t know how much ram (i think steve said 1GB) now remember the mac version of adobe is recompiled for OS X (umm ok). Before the keynote what put me on the edge was when apple shipped techtv an iBook to review... he ran from the deliver guy to the set opened the boxs and tried to remove the keyboard to show the insides... he only remvoed one of the clips and prodeded to break the keyboard. One air he had the nerve to call it flimsy and subrate.
