Harry Zink has developed a PHP-based Web interface for accessing, retrieving and sending Mac.com e-mail from any browser. Zink is still developing the solution and plans to release a document explaining how users can set up their own Web-based interface for Mac.com e-mail.

    Security problem.

Why would I consent to send my mac.com POP password to this person who runs macmailer.com? Remember that there is a stranger in the middle potentially sniffing passwords as they pass through.

    Something to think about.

    Redesign

He might as well start redesigning now. There's no way Apple will allow him to run a site which clearly masquerades as being part of apple.com/mac.com proper. Moreover, I don't really see the point of this site, unless the proprietor plans to profit personally from it--there are already plenty of free Web-based POP clients.

    POP client security?

Unless you run your own mail server in your basement, someone can always look at your messages.

Even popping through Yahoo or any of the number of other providers of web based mail, you're giving your password to a third party.

I'd be worried about Apple cracking down on the design more than the security issues. I only use this account for unsecure mail anyway. If I was checking it from a public terminal, I'd be more concerned with my password getting cached than this guy reading my trivial coorespondence.

Now if he follows up with the source to create an equally easy and efficient means of checking POP accounts from my website rather than his, I'd be all over it.

I guess I see this kind of like Rubio's TROOPS -- a demonstration of his skills in hopes of impressing the right people, and maybe landing a better gig.

    I did MacMailer.com

    To clariy:

    1. No one forces you to use the site. I started the site out of pure convenience for myself and some of my friends. If you don't like it, or are paranoid that I will read your insigificant correspondence, don't use it.

    2. As my message on Macintouch clarifies, I plan on releasing all necessary information on how to duplicate this setup on your own servers, or mac os X system. Nothing to it, really, that's why I think it's cool that the more people know about, the better for everyone.

    3. MacMailer.com was availabe, and at domains at $10 a pop, there wasn't much to it to add a nice professional touch.

    4. The interface that's on there right now is a placeholder, and will be significantly changed as time passes. This has nothing to do with Apple legal, but simply because the itools interface looks nice (besides the fact that Apple *should* be offering this kind of access), and served well as a placeholder. You can bet that the Apple in the upper tab will be a goner as soon as I get the time to modify the graphics.
