ATI cards gone from BTO

There is no longer the option to include any card from ATI in Power Mac G4 Systems using Apple's build-to-order system. ATI's cards still power all of Apple's notebooks and the new iMac line.

    Under The Radar

Am I the only one who reads the fine print? Check out the 'Expansion' section of the new G4 descriptions, and on the right-hand column, note where Apple is suggesting those that want dual Apple LCD Displays should purchase an ATi Radeon and Dr. Bott DVIator from the Apple Store in order to fill out that need.

    link

Pity, though, they don't offer (let alone even suggest) these options while configuring a new G4, and you have to hunt through the peripherals pages until you find them.

Ah, well, at least Apple is finally blessing a solution to an expensive problem they created.

    This isn't good

Choice is good. No choice is bad. I hope all us ATi card owners aren't reliant upon ATi to produce drivers for a platform that they no longer have an inside track on...

Also, did anyone else notice ATI's announcement on July 18:

RADEON VE MAC EDITION, with connectors for traditional CRT monitors, flat panel displays and TV out, features 32 MB of DDR memory and multi-monitor support. Boards will ship in September 2001 and will have a MSRP of (US) $129.

TV OUT THAT'S WHAT I WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Apple. Oh the pain of it all.

    ati did it to themselves

well, okay, steve did it to them. but even i don't moon the crazy pit bull in the neighborhood. and leaking that new hardware news at expo kinda sealed their fate (especially since nvidia seems willing to turn cartwheels for apple now).

    Reasons

I don't think a multibillion dollar company is going to make product decisions for reasons quite that petty.

The marketing c***...I mean, "press release" page for the 10.1 preview includes this point:

    • greatly enhanced 3D graphics performance with updated OpenGL software and full support for NVIDIA GeForce3;

There are things that can be done through OpenGL on the Geforce3 that can't be done on other current cards; it looks like Apple is genuinely trying to finally bring Macs up to speed in the 3D arena. This is cool because it means people will be able to run Crazy Car Championship with all the bells and whistles. ;) It's uncool because it binds them tightly to one video chipset manufacturer (the only competition left in this area is between Nvidia and ATI, and they do both have stuff to offer - the Radeon is a good card).

The other reason is that they're still trying to persist with that godawful (and inevitably doomed, if only because it incorporates the days-are-numbered DVI standard) ADC video connector, which prevents them from using off-the-shelf componentry (among its many other reasons for deserving termination). It's a shame, because it'd be nice to be able to choose from the Geforce3 for 3D gamers and the Radeon VE (AGP) for more normal people interested in the TV output.

    FIRST POST!! oh, wait.....

any way, the geforce cards are better, but since the only video mode thats usuable all around the board is RAVE (and OpenGL in quake) ATI's are still better for gaming.

    DVI Days are numbered?

Not to argue or create a flame war, but I am curious as to why you say this? Most of the PC flat panel monitors coming out have DVI connectors - did you mean to say the horrible proprietary ADC connector instead of DVI - or is there something you know that you would like to elaborate on? just curious and concerned

    DVI days are numbered?

He meant that DVI days at Apple are numbered. The original Cinema Display was DVI...no longer.

    Too bad for Apple

Leaving out a choice for the consumer, for what ever reason is stupid business sense. A consumer want the ability to buy a machine the way he/she wants it. Is the everyday designer going to spent $200 extra for the GeF3? Too bad that is the only choice. Thanks for nothing Apple.

    GeForce better? Nope...

The Geforce's are not only slower in many cases than the Raedon but the drivers are horrible too (probably the reason for them being slower). I was origionally going to replace my icky GeForce 2MX with a GeForce 3 but that doesn't seem to be any better on existing software. The upcoming Raedon R200 and R300's on the other hand look much nicer with things like Trueform and Smartshader and a pixel pipeline to match the GeForce 3. Add to that ATI's much more mature Mac drivers and this is a no-brainer. No doubt NVidia will release a GeForce 3 Ultra or something to try and keep customers but I'm not going to touch one of their cards for at least about another year or so when they've got their drivers sorted out...
