Despite new product announcements this morning and a quarterly report that beat analysts' estimates yesterday, shares of Apple's stock are hovering around $20 during midday trading, down nearly $5 since yesterday, a change of almost 20 percent. Volume is extremely heavy, with 15 million shares already changing hands by 2:00 PM EST.

    THEY BLEW IT

they blew the OSX coming out party. dvd support is not making it this spring. all the new items won't be out for 3 months. they're going to have even worse sales for q4.

    Easy now

They didn't blow anything. The software offerings and the new G4s are stellar. Q4 sales look fine, given the sales momentum in K-12 Ed. The time horizons for all announced offerings are within the quarter.

The sell off is WAY over done. People are so emotional about this topic. Apple is doing remarkably well in a bizarre economic environment. The response is picking the wrong targets. Apple is fine, which can't be said for many of it's "friends" on the wintel side.

    they did blow it

Pretty crappy show. But then again part of it is probably because they smartly released the iBook early. That gives more time for its acceptance to build by the fall for schools and students, but it made for zero interesting innovations to announce at the show.

Now Apple is following Microsoft's lead rather than vice versa. Releasing a beta OS and fixing it months later. Buggy software bought and repackaged from other companies.

The speed tests everyone knows is flawed. PC users laugh at these Photoshop tests. Let me see the performance of a 3D game, a web browser, a word processor, a web server, etc.

The Windows networking in OS 10.1 will be nice, but is it bidirectional?

I think it was a good idea not to turn the iMac into a flat panel computer though. Flat panels are too expensive, overrated, and not tough enough for long term use such as in schools. Really, the iBook is the flat panel iMac.

Personally I'm waiting til next year.

    Yep, keep waiting

The new machines are a solid evolution, but they shouldn't have waited until a show to release them. Keep the processor bumps to 733 & 867 coming for another 6-8 months, & they'll be competitive & worth buying.

Overall, a great show, if only to let Apple know that its customers really do think the current stuff is utter c***.

    Photoshop comparisons

It's crazy that they use a PC outfitted with the same hardware, when that hardware is outdated on the PC side. They should compare a machine of the same cost, so they'd be competing against DDR RAM, 266MHz buses, ATA100, etc. Artificially limiting the entire computer *except* for the processor is too obviously an attempt to cater to the masses who look at CPU speed & nothing else. For the same price on a PC, they'd be getting much better support technologies, too.

They ABSOLUTELY did not "blow it." This is ridiculous. The advances in OS X and the new G4s are remarkable. The sales are humming. It make sense to keep development costs down this quarter with regard to the iMac, given the strong sales in K-12 Ed. Enough already. Take it easy.

    Makes no sense

They beat the profit targets - why is their stock dropping nearly 20% today? h***, it was 25 after the last profit announcement and dropped back down - what's it gonna take for Wall Street to play fair with Apple?

    Press bias

I thought it was interesting yesterday that the headline for Apple beating the street but having lower profits was "Apple sees drop of 70% in profis", while Intel beating the street and having a drop of 94% in profits was basically "Intel beats analysts' estimates." Yeah, objective reporting -- like h***!
