A MacNN reader has informed us that he has received a replacement adapter for the PowerBook G3 series adapter he sent to Apple about a week after he ordered it. The adapter is one of the new "silver discus" models, not the thin black model that was shipped with the older PowerBook G3 portables.

    It's not so bad....

Although the silver yo-yo adapter is a bit bulky...alright, it's HUGE... I think it looks better than the black brick. That's a plus, right? And that cord-wrapping "feature" is pretty slick. I guess there are trade-offs for good looks, and in this case: size. But, I find this recall odd, since my black power brick rarely gets uncomfortably warm, even when it's been plugged in for many days, and also, Apple is ignoring bigger problems, such as massive reports of hinge faliure (in which Apple refers to "user wear and tear").

    yo-yo swap

fyi: for those with the yo-yo adapters, don't think you are completely out of this "recall." call apple, and give them your serial numbers (powerbook and adapter). i decided to, and turns out my silver yo-yo is up for recall, too. they are sending me a new one, with a box and return postage for my current adapter. just thought people should know.

    Does it fit?

I've been hearing that the replacement adapters are a very tight fit. Enough so that after a few uses the socket in the PB stands a good chance of breaking. Has that been anybody elses experience?
