IOGear will demonstrate its new MiniView II USB KVM (Keyboard, Video, and Mouse) switch at next week's MWNY Expo. The device, making its debut on the Mac platform, incorporates hot keys and On-Screen Displays (OSD). Its USB sniffing technology provides mouse and keyboard emulation so users' systems will not lose their connection with USB input devices when in use.

    Good... maybe

I hope this one works, unlike their other one. I have a MiniView and the best I can do with it is make it work as a monitor switch.

    MiniView

Yes, I also have a MiniView. And it doesn't even work as a monitor switch. I have a Sony monitor and a B&W G3 and a Dell. I always get ghosting on the screen with whichever computer is turned on second. After dozens of hours with Tech support at Apple, Dell, Sony, and ofcourse IOGear the thing still doesn't work. (Tried high end cables, and wraping everything in tin foil to remove interfearence.) Thing is just a peice of c***. (Yes, they exchanged it and I tried another one.

    Mine works well

I bought a MiniView USB II switch recently, and it works quite well for me. The "instant USB switch" is sweet. The on-screen display works, but I don't find it that useful in my situation. Two Control key presses brings it up and you interact with it through the keyboard.

My Mac OS X 10 Server and Compaq iPAQ are both fully functional through it. My Mac OS 9.1 computer only sees my Macally two button & scroll wheel mouse as a one button mouse though. I think that this is a Macally driver issue.

The new unit comes with four custom cables integrating video and USB (normal connectors though). The cables are well made, and seem to have thumbscrews like I see on a lot of Belkin cables. This might address some of the cable problems reported here.

    $ and 4 ports only?

Looks like they only have 4 port version for $300.

    Anyone tried the Dr.Bott MoniSwitch2USB KVM? I need it for a Mac (OS 9 & 10) and a Linux Box (2.4.x)

    Installed One Today...

...On a PB G3 (Lombard) and a 'home-built' dual PIII/1GHz box, driving a UMAX 21" monitor, MacAlly iKey keyboard, Logitech optical wheel mouse, Palm USB/Serial adapter and Saitek Cyborg 3D joystick.

Other than a 10 second or so delay in 'getting my mouse back' when I switch, it seems to be working well.

The small size is nice, although the weight of all the cables prevents it from resting flat on the table. I'll probably mount it to the wall behind the table anyway. At least I can see the table again!

    Dual monitor input w/ USB

Don't many modern monitors have dual inputs as well as USB ports? Don't the USB ports switch over when the display does? Such a monitor makes it trivial to share a USB keyboard & mouse between modern Macs & PCs.

    Dr. Bott

My friend is using the Dr. Bott KVM and loves it, he's had no video or USB issues at all with his TiBook and his Dell. He tried the Belkin one and had lots of video ghosting.

    Works fine for me

I have two MinView 2-way switches - one at home, one at work. They work fabulously.

The problem with switches built into monitors is that the requirement for such functionality severely limits your monitor choices. I have a monitor that I share between a Linux PC (VGA input) and two Macs (BNC input connected to MiniView.) When I was shopping around for a monitor, my first requirement was dual inputs. This severely narrowed down my choices, but it was a real requirement for me. I can't imagine how far I'd get if I was requiring USB switching as well.

    Re: Installed One Today..

It takes me about 3 seconds to switch into Mac OS X (400 MHz iMac or 450 MHz cube), 6-7 seconds on a UMAX clone running 9.1 (12 seconds if filesharing is enabled), and 4-5 seconds to switch into Win2000 on a PIII-667.

    Not the new one, right?

the new one isn't out yet, right? So the 'installed one today' is the old one?

I have an old 4-port Miniview switcher, and it works great - switching a G4/733 and P3/600 right now. I even plug my Rio 600 into the extra USB ports, and its visible to both machines. Quite cool.

It will be possibly worth upgrading when the new one is out - the delay gets annoying. I wonder how they'll keep the USB connection active without actually sending the signals to the machine?
