It's true. OS X rocks. When Apple FINISHES the damn thing, it will be a sight to behold. Even now, before it's been spit and polished, the raves are beginning. Jobs and Apple are sitting on a bomb ready to go off. Too bad they don't have the hardware to light the fuse.

Good News

Its good to see people actually waking up and really looking at the technology rather than relying at what the ads say. Microsoft makes a lot of software; yes, but they make a lot of very mediocre software! Windows XP is no exception since its based on the same roots all their other software is, a poor attempt to imitate (err, 'innovate') other peoples work.

Making Money with OS X

I'm currently making a web site using Mac OS X as my technology basis as a side job at home making $40 an hour! This web site in the BIOTech Equipment World. MySQL, Apache, Perl, and BBEdit are my best friends and this would not be possible without OS X. People are not keen on Linux. Too techy for most but My client was more than willing to use Apple after previous quotes from "microsoft" people were starting at $45,000 just for the software. SQL 2000 (dual CPU machine) and Win 2000 Advanced Server.
The project is humming along and my client is VERY happy. When it's done they will be buy whatever G4 tower I tell them too. It will be a dual G4. The bang for the buck for Mac OS X is 5,000,000 more bang than micro$oft could ever hope to do! I love the new os it's the most flexable and useful OS ever created! And it runs Quake 3 Arena really well too! All on my iMac DV 400 (Grape) w/192 MB RAM.

I reckon Apple must be paying off these magazines everyone once in a while so they can put raving reports on their website. OSX is too slow (at appliaction launching and GUI) to be a usable OS yet. Anyone tryed working with Freehand yet? s**** that for a joke.

speeds suxors points in OSX !!! :( guess it will evolve soon and hotdamn it better be soon. freehan has always been cloggy as h***. every since FH vers. 5.5 it has been performing worse and worse. but thats macromedia all the way. just look at the performance of the flash(player) engine today and compare it to the 2.0 engine. (!!!/???)

WinXP

I've been a devout Mac user since I got a Rev. A iMac the day they came out (August 15th, 1998). I've been using Macs everyday since. But just today I got to use the RC1 build of Windows XP, and it id most definitely impressive.

It does contain a lot od OS X rip-offs, but what PC users will have in another few months is lightyears ahead of what they've had until now. And it definitely isn't the same old Win9x c*** with a fancy new (Aqua-inspired) GUI. This thing has been rock solid for me so far, and I've thrown all kinds of c*** at it (installed old apps, tweaked the thing) - it just won't fall.

It's not a competition anymore, fellas. Sure, it's nice that we Mac users have a great modern OS that boasts as many technical features as UNIX and the rest, but that's no reason to be a platform bigot and start shooting Microsoft products down just because they come from M$.

Sure it is a good idea to add Pirate protection, but the way XP does it just isn't practical fo IT managers. Imagine having to obtain software activation codes everytime you have to reinstall software that you have already registered on the same machine. Not only that, you have to be plugged into a network connection. Good luck if you are on the road with a laptop. I know we as a company aren't going to touch XP with a 10 foot pole. Meanwhile I already have 3 Mac OS X Servers running.

There's a huge difference in the auto vs. computer world. The most refined cars also perform well. Mac's haven't for over a year... G4s are like the 318ti: it has the roundel, but it just doesn't live up to the promises associated with it.

Corporate licenses

Windows XP has corporate license keys, just like every other version of Windows and Office. A compnay is assigned auniversal key with which they may activate any number of workstations, so long as those workstations end up being paid for. It's exactly the same as it used to be.

But for those businesses who are too small for a corporate license, yet too big to handle individual licenses on a large scale, there could be problems.

But I don't know, let's see how M$ works this one out... it's still a few months away and nothing is final yet.

Well - Get ready to see many more positive comments about MacOS X, which is really NextStep 5.0. I bought a copy of OpenStep on Mach Intel on ebay and it really is amazing how far ahead of NextStep/OpenStep time it was years ago. It is incredibly fast and the reviewer was right on the mark about the user interface, advantages of NextStep. In fact I am going to the post office in a few minutes to pick up my copy of Framemaker for NextStep.

What most people forget when they whine and b**** about Adobe ports and other major software vendors, is that if Apple triples its market share in the next 18 months. The greed factor will kick in and the vendors will get real motivated to do the ports.

Essentially the existing 90's PC hardware and software has lost its momentum and credibility. Systems using advances such as AMD/Nvidia'a nForce hardware architecture will have a major impact running on Linux. Microsoft and Intel are screwed.

You know, I hope you're right. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people out there that aren't computer literate.

When these people do as the original poster suggested and buy themselves a Mac, they will learn to use their computers fairly easily. And, because of Microsoft's techniqes of "innovating" (you know: copy what Apple does), they will be quite at home on XP, too.

Damn, this troll may be on to something --! Too bad he thought he was insulting everybody.

XP: the best for novices

Most of us here don't really understand what a newbie faces when first confronting a computer. Apple has always done well with intuitive interfaces, but the fact remains that if someone doesn't have a clear idea of what a scroll bar is, then even Apple's OS interface can be frightening and alien.

For all of XP's faults, and for all of Microsoft's faults, Windows XP has a newbie interface that far out-classes anything offered elsewhere, even here at the home of UI innovation.

Unfortunately, this makes it even easier for Microsoft to take advantage of the consumer. But the important point is that it makes using the PC easier for those who've had no prior experience. It's good, and it's something Apple needs to be aware of. Forget "panels" and "simple Finder" and give newbies something as easy and task-driven as XP.

the gist was sort of right, but many of the details in the
article were flat out wrong. there is no "App Builder" (it's
Project Builder and Interface Builder, with which you can use
Java about as easily as Objective C), programmers don't
"cotton to Microsoft's versions of the C language" (thinking of
C Sharp?), they cotton to C++, which they can use with Carbon
no problem... the writer missed Carbon completely. and Borland
J Builder does *not* ship with the OS.

"reinstalling the computer" is a bizarre phrase, and one wonders
if the writer really had to reinstall the OS, or was just
clueless.

the companion "Nuts and Bolts" article also has several errors,
beginning with the doozy "Itanium PowerBook". Itanium is Intel's
trademark for their next generation processor chip -- shows how
marketing screws up people's minds!

the comments about the "blue desktop" are misleading. the writer
also disses the widely acclaimed OmniWeb and doesn't seem to
realize Mozilla *is* Netscape...

do not rely on journalists for accuracy or completeness, even if
the word "smart" is in the rag's title.
