Aladdin Knowledge Systems has released TimeHASP USB, the industry's first USB-based security key providing cross-platform protection through a real-time, on-key clock that is designed for renting or leasing software. Available in a variety of colors, the key supports the Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems and is equipped with 512 bytes of read/write memory that enables developers to license up to 112 software modules.

    Bla Bla Bla

I did a few of the 'I posted first' posts ages ago. It was kind of cute for a (short) while. I have never done a varient on the 'all your...' -- thank the lordy.
Lets give the 'I posted first' thing a rest. It is getting tired.

Looks like Aladdin has a useful little creation here, I am going to try it out now.

    Hmmm...

Aladdin: All your software pirates are belong in prison?

Wow. Talk about software n****. If this gets widely implimented, I'm going open source. Paying for software is so luddite.

Please do go to open source. If you don't feel commercial software is worth paying for, that's perfectly OK, but you also don't have the right to use it. It's really very arrogant of you to just decide that the hard work of programmers has no value. I agree that devices such as this are less than ideal, but it's a neccesary evil when people with opinions like yours are out there. We programmers have to eat too you know.

    How Microsoftian...

The whole idea of renting software is complete bullshit.

I'm sure that if I were a developer I'd be drooling over the thought of s******* my loyal customers on a monthly basis.

"Hmm, lessee, we have customers who have been using our product to do their jobs for years, and they are now locked into us...Let's nail them for thousands of dollars a year since they have no choice. I need a tissue, I feel so damp..."

I believe in paying for software, but renting it is going too far.

Long live the crackers, who will always figure a way around this type of s***!

    Renting

I totally agree that renting is a really stupid idea, but I still say that it's the author/company who gets to decide their licensing scheme. If they want to make you 'rent' the software, fine, they're shooting themselves in the foot =)

    Renting is normal

Why is renting so bad? We rent apartments, houses, video tapes, DVDs, cars, etc. Renting software is just like that, when we use it we pay for it, when we don't use it we don't pay for it. I think renting is fine, but just like the examples I mentioned renting should be much less expesnsive then buying and there should be an option to buy at a reasonable price.

Also, open source is nice and all, but if someone feels there software is worth charging for that's their right. If you don't like to pay for it then don't use it, otherwise it's stealing plain and simple. Either develop your own software or don't use it.

I would very much like to see all these "crackers" and "software pirates" out there be sentenced to writing shareware and charging for it and see how much food they can put on the table for their families.
