BusinessWeek Online has published "How Apple is Reclaiming the Classroom," detailing Apple's moves to recapture the leadership position in the education market. The article notes that PowerSchool, the company offering a Web-based school administration system that Apple purchased earlier this year, has doubled its customer base since its acquisition.

Wow, it's positive. And points out what I've been saying all along, you get what you pay for. Macs may be somewhat more expensive but you get an added value for that cost. I espcially like when they said "Unlike Apple, they control neither the operating system nor software in their boxes -- in short, the computing experience. Apple knows that good schools are not built out of stacks of cheap PCs."

IceBook??????.....and I didn't know Business Week was necessarily "PC-centric". Wintel machines take up the majority of overall usage. Does that mean Sports Illustrated is PC-centric because they type on Windows?

PC-centric

a organization that tends to favour the pc because it has a larger installed base so using anything else is not good business. therefore the articles they rite reflect this dim view and cast shadows on the use of the mac. it has nothing to do with what they use. many other business use peecees but when they review a mac they do it well with the mac buyer in mind also. not somje newbie from the peecee's view.......

Actually, SI (like every other magazine on the newsstand) is primarily put together using Macs. Though of course individual writers may use Windows for whatever reason (god knows I can't think of any).

I hope we all understand that these markey surveys can be massaged to say anything we want... after all there are "lies, damn lies, and statistics".
However, if there's one thing we can determine from the last year or so of education market surveys, it's that if Apple lost ground, it was through their own ineptitude last year, and not from anything compelling coming out of Dell.
It stood to reason that if Apple could set things right again, they'd be number 1 in education again, since Dell wasn't doing anything to differentiate itself other than sell cheap boxes.

Powerschool doubled its installed base since they bought it? Wasn't that only a few weeks ago? I'm guessing that's what that 200% of zero comment was in reference to, but if you ask me doubling your customer base in that short a period is pretty impressive, and (considering how cool Powerschool's product is) that could bode very well for the future--especially if the "package deal" (Powerschool management/Apple hardware) looks appealing enough.

Even if it doesn't, though, a profitable and expanding business (which, as far as I know, Powerschool is) is a good thing to have in your company's portfolio.

you people need to understand that eventually powerschool is going to be a template on how all schools are going to be grading and assigning, giving feedback and scores to parents and students. it is the only real solution that has been successful initially. and, there is no substitute for it as far as competition goes. these school management companies are going to try and compete and fail at out-doing powerschool
product and service. does dell have a school management solution? microsoft? compaq?

Do you know anything about Powerschool or its competitors? "Hey look it's from Apple, therefore it must be cool."

The leaders in student management solutions are NCS Pearson (www.ncs.com) and Chancery (www.chancery.com). Both have a significantly larger share of the market than Powerschool and both have richer product lineups, offering school districts more choices and features. While NCS produces products for that other platform, Chancery has been providing Macintosh based solutions for teachers and school administrators since 1984. Chancery's Mac School is one of the reasons Apple was able to hold onto as many schools as it did during the dark Performa years.

PowerSchool

PowerSchool and similar competing products will have a difficult time growing since many schools have their information management systems dictated by the state. Ohio, for example, will be entrenched in its primitive, text-based software from Campus America.
