PowerBooks, Power Macs, and Final Cut Pro were used in the production of the Discovery Channel's special “When Dinosaurs Roamed America," according to Apple's feature, which ends with a short Q&A on HD video, digital video, and other aspects of production process and hardware (including a FCP Pro tip).

    What's an "EDI Drive"?

    The story refers to

"Six 75GB EDI drives (450GB total)"

    Type or special drive?

    Who cares?

Macs and PCs are used every day for a variety of things, does it really matter that a Mac made the show? This whole business of reporting Mac sitings is making me nauseous, it's a tool people!

    EDI Drive

I think the writer has just got the EIDE acronym a bit mixed up. If you read further down ("Why DV?") the drives are referred to variously as EDIE and EIDE. I guess the drives in question are oridnary ATA/IDE drives.

    What's even better

Is that a Mac was actually used to make this post. Yes, the Mac is becoming so f'ing popular. Thanks to sites like this that report on the triviality of the use of machines.

PS. I also hear that PC's are used to do things from time to time too. Maybe c|Net has the list of PCs that show up in movies or used to bill clients.

    oh come off it!

You know very well why this sort of thing is reported. Most people still think that Macs are underpowered and unsorted, therefore making them useless. When they are used in a high profile production, knowing that they were used can be an asset. One can point to those examples, which because they are high profile many people have heard of it, and explain that it is an example of how a Mac can be used. And used quite effectively, from the sound of things.

This has nothing to do with "Macs are better than PCs or workstations" or any such small minded garbage. It's an example, nothing more, and people who like Macs like hearing about new and worthwhile ways others use them.

Quit trolling. Go to slashdot if you enjoy that sort of thing. At least there I don't have to rid your small minded drivel.

The poster actually does have a point, however sarcastically made and trollish. At some point you want to stop reporting on every tiny little example of a Mac being usefully used, and just treat it as normal. "Well, of course" is a better long-term mantra than "lookit lookiiiiit!!!". ;)

In a broader sense, there is a point where evangelism goes from a good (or at least necessary) thing to being a definite liability. Maybe Apple isn't there yet, but they're definitely close.

    needs proofing

I was surprised at the number of factual errors and typos in the article. Stuff like that really undermines credibility, IMHO, since it seems to indicate that nobody involved with Apple's web publishing knows anything about digital video. How hard would it really be to have someone (Mr. Sanders?) look everything over before posting the story?

    Hmmm...

The reason that the article is posted on MacNN is because it was first posted on MacMinute, thereby making it a news item, as all the other pages post many of the stories from MacNN.

But the reason that it's even a news item at all is the importance of Final Cut Pro to apple, for a variety of reasons. It's also important for the film industry to know about broadcasts made using FCP and High Def, such as at Discover and Showtime, etc. FCP is spreading like wildfire outside of the studio big boys, and maybe items like this one will help it get adopted on larger projects such as a major feature film. Alas, but that won't happen until FCP supports video and FILM, a la Film Logic which they recently purchased...

is anyone dumb enough to actually try to use a PC for this level of video editing?
