    Video compression

Well, it seems like wavlets is the next big thing in image compresion.

Currently, cosine transfrom is used in video compression. I guess wavlet compression schemes will be common over the next few years. ( Wouldnt it be nice if Apple/Sorenson licensed a wavlet compression scheme? ). I guess wavlet transform is very CPU bound, but I read an Apple document suggesting Altivec could speed wavlet transfrom by a factor of 5.....

Trust me, computers are not fast enough yet for these kind of tasks... we need that 2 Ghz G5;)

    JPEG 2 = Wavelet

JPEG 2000 and MJPEG 2000 are wavelet based. Apple (NeXT) has had wavelet technology for almost ten years.
Check out the Apple Scientific Computation pages at Apple.com for more info on Wavelet at Apple.
