    Unbelievable

I can't believe anyone would pay $20 US for a port of WinPop. Why not just use ICQ or another free, more capable messaging client? It's weird the number of should-be-free little bits of software that Mac developers seem to thing should cost bundles of money.

There are lots of free clients for this SMB protocol for Unix; shouldn't be hard to make one run under Mac OS X with rootless XFree86.

    Why I'd use it

Two reasons why I'd use it.:

    1) It's "client only" -- no need to get a server involved.

    2) It's *not* internet based -- this would only be for connecting to local subnets, etc.

The reason I haven't bought it? The OSX version seems to want to use SLP for finding the other users of this. My problem is that my building router isn't passing SLP (I think) and I'm limited to seeing what's in my local subnet instead of what's in my building...

    local-net IM

Sounds a lot like "zephyr" - we use it where I work. It was around before AIM and ICQ, and isn't a full Internet based service. Unix based; we use Solaris boxes here. See http://web.mit.edu/olh/Zephyr/Zephyr.html for more info.
