Afternoon tech news: IBM has called Microsoft's attacks on the open-source community "arrogance" with a futile and counterproductive nature; AOL Time Warner is seeking regulatory approval to offer high-speed Internet services after striking deals with Juno and EarthLink; Slashdot.org's parent company VA Linux is in some financial trouble, laying off 35 percent of its staff and abandoning the hardware business.

    Welcome to the Real World

    In the Real World people use computers other than Macs. In some cases Maacs are part of a larger computing infrastructure that includes Microsoft products, and yes even Linux.

    Many people who work with Macs in support capacities frequent this site and many others and in an effort to better serve the larger Mac community that actually does some WORK with coputers instead of playing games and messing around with Linux/networking in your bedroom/dorm MacNN serves up more general computer industry news.

    You know there is a rumor that there is National news coverage on TB, you know news from outside your little community! Perish the thought that you might be in contact with the rest of humanity!

    Yes, typing horrible

    I am human, I am running on fumes not having eaten all day (I don''t get to wander to me kitchen in my parents house and grab whatever food they have worked to provide, I must wait till a specified lunch period before I can even THINK of eating).

    My satire is not, however, hunger-induced. It is a commentary on the sad state of many people who can't see beyond their own computer screens to the greater world we all live in that works in many different ways with many different computing products.

    (Gee I actually typed okay this time!)

    Relevant how?

    Quite simple really: OS X is based on Darwin. Darwin is open-source. So when Microsoft and IBM start duking about open-source, the future of open-source steps into the mainstream and takes on a whole new level of significance. And Apple will inevitably feel the fallout from these two giants. Consider this news a "heads-up."
