Intech's high-performance drive utility, Hard Disk SpeedTools 3.3, improves performance and compatibility with FireWire drives, adds support for all CastleWood "branded" ATAPI and FireWire Orb 5.7GB products, and includes drive "Sleep" support to HDST FireWire drivers (as well as FireWire drive spin down on system shutdown). Sleep support?

What do they mean by this? Can I get my FW drive to go to sleep when its inactive for a period of time? Doesn't appear so - so much for "sleep" support . . .

    most drives..

most fw drives spin down after 30minutes automatically. thats about the only sleep you can use since most drives dont even have a power switch.

    Device drivers...

One assumes the driver now hooks into the same Energy Saver OS pref that causes other drives to spin down. Try setting the drive timeout there and see whether your Firewire drive responds.

The whole point of not having a power switch is that the drive can spin down (sleep) when not in use...

Powerbook users are familiar with all this; I used to have a dirty great tank of a SCSI drive attached to my PB, which would spin down automatically when idle, or when I slept or shut down the PB. Great noise reducer. ;)
