Evening tech news: Microsoft, along with Intel, PC makers, and retailers, plans on spending $1 billion promoting Windows XP, its upcoming operating system; Palm announced a fourth quarter loss of $89.2 million on revenue of $165.3 million, as well as more than $435 million in charges after writing off a glut of unsold products; and 3Com said today that its net loss widened to $518 million for its fiscal fourth quarter, and it does not expect an industry turnaround anytime soon.

    $ 1 billion

Is this story saying that Microsoft etc will spend $ 1 billion in advertising ? Call me an anti-trust lawyer.

    In other words...

MSFT wants to avoid the marketing disaster of Windows ME, which didn't sell well at all. They're going to pummel people just like they did with Windows 95.

But 95 was such a dramatic leap from 3.1, it'll be interesting to see if XP can really pursuade 95/98 users to upgrade...

I'm not holding my breath. I know tons of people who use Win 98 and don't want anything more / else.

    Good...

...for everyone in the advertising and media industries.

We'll take their money and happily bang out MS ads all day... using our Macs!

    MS Tower

So does this mean we're going to see another giant advertisement down the side of the CN Tower like we did for Windows 95? And will Best Buy use WinXP as a marketing ploy again? "Windows 95 Computer Revolution" my butt! That revolution happened in 1984! Donchya remember the commercial? :)

    You missed the point

The story is that Intel, M$ and most of the larger PC makers are pooling their resources (i.e.) money to promote XP. When was the last time that Moto. or IBM spent a dime to promote power pc or Mac OS? I don't know how but we need to get Moto and IBM on the OS X bandwagon.

    Any sugestions?

    Hmm…

I'll bet that we will see yet another MS campaign telling you that all the troubles of the previous Windows version will be over if you upgrade.

I don't think you get it

If M$ spends 1 billion for XP than this is going to reach the entire world! Everybody! And if the ads are good (M$ commercials are always good, why else would they be marketleader) , then people who don't know better (my dad for example) will say: "Wow, this must be a kickass OS!"

So, Apple has a big problem now!

    They better do something quick!
