EarthLink raises prices, adds services

Scott J. notes that EarthLink, Apple's preferred Internet Service Provider (ISP), is raising the price of its basic, unlimited dial-up Internet service by $2 to $22 per month, effective July 2, 2001 for all new subscribers and August 1, 2001 for current subscribers. As part of the price hike, customers will now receive a total of eight e-mail addresses on each account (up from one) and bring all customers up to at least 10 MB of web space. In addition, customers have the option of a one-year, prepay option that would cost $20 per month for the next 12 months.

    better than AOL...

    at least Earthlink is adding functionality to justify raising its prices. What new services did AOL give its customers when they raised their price?

    Still too much...

    ...considering dialups at $22-$25 plus a second phone line are MORE expensive than having a cable modem, I don't see them staying around very long in any area with cable modem access. I use Earthlink 'cause they had the most access numbers, but today I only use it when I travel (thanks to having a cable modem at home). I'll be signing off from them before the increase since I know there are plenty of other services that are cheaper.

    I've now seen five different ISPs use the same access number here in my home town, so I have to wonder just what you actually get from one to the other (mail server, web space access, etc.). mac.com handles my e-mail quite nicely (when it works).

    Before you join Earthlink

    You should know that they are related to the "church" of scientology. Are you clear?

    That's assuming you get a second phone line. Also, for people who don't spend their time downloading large files after large files (most of my web time is spent reading, not downloading), why give $40-$50 to a no-good cable company already sucking away my money through their high cable prices???

    mergers = no competition

    Stuff like this is why you don't let companies like AOL and Time Warner (cable) merge. Have you noticed how the cost of tech and computer related goods always goes down, yet the cost of basic dialup has gone up over the past 5 years? AOL, Earthlink, et al put the small ISP's out of business and now they can charge whatever they want. The same thing is happening to the DSL market. Verizon and SBC are s******* the ISPs - in another year they'll be gone. This will be increasingly important as more and more people get broadband. It really sucks when your only choices are: 1: Get screwed by the phone company or 2: get screwed by the cable company.

    scientology who cares so are most actors.... maybe we should boycot yahoo for give in the the religous right in the nation....

    why earthlink might be an option... well what if you lived in lets say alaska or nebraska i doubt you have a local cable company let along one that offers internet service... also not everyone needs a second phone line...

    is it better than aol? maybe it just depends on your needs. if your just starting out and want easy email and webaccess chat everyone and then aol is a great choice. if you know your way around well it might not be the best. its a give and take.

    Earthlink has cheaper rat

    But it's not advertised. You can get a lower rate if you ask for limited hours.
