Brother has introduced a new line of USB-based personal laser printers: the HL-1440, HL-1450 and HL-1470N, which bring faster print speeds, higher resolution, more standard memory, and both interactive and online user support.

All three new printers, which replace the existing HL-1200 series printers, offer improved output quality of up to 1200 x 600 dpi print resolution and a new interactive help system that uses Shockwave-based animation files to provide visual cues for solving common user problems. Each printer also ships with a one-year express exchange warranty.

The HL-1440 includes a 15 ppm print engine 2MB of standard RAM, and a 250-sheet universal paper cassette. It is expected to ship later this month for $300. The HL-1450, due in July for $350, ships with 8MB of RAM, offers a second paper-tray option, and has PCL6/BR-Script support. The network-ready HL-1470N is due in July for $500. [site not updated]

    What a world...

To think that just a few years ago, Brother was the laughing stock of printer manufacturers. You've come a long way baby. I might have to pick up one of these babies myself. Anyone with solid experience with their 1200 series?

    HP vs Brother

I've been looking for a cheap Ethernet laser. The HP 1200N is around $600 right now, $100 more than Brother's comparable 1470N model. I wonder if the Brother lasers are as reliable as HP's traditionally are? Of course, the new & cheap HP line may not be so great itself. Anybody have one, or the old Brother 1200 series?

    1200 series

Yes, I have plenty of experience with the HL1240.

It supports USB mac connectivity, but will not work over a network. It's a nice printer, and didn't cost very much, so I bought it for my business, only to find that it's only networkable with every other OS.

We tried using Windows sharing, Linux NetATalk, and finally I scoured the web only to find there isn't any support for it over a network.

Now we've moved on to the Lexmark and it works like a charm. Quality is lower, but, hey, it's only text!

    Brother 1200 Series

I have used the 1200 series (1240 I think) for two years and I have no complaints. It was reccomended to me by a PC friend who has used one for even longer. It seems quite reliable, prints pretty fast and was a much better overall value than a comparable HP. Toner can be a bit more expensive/harder to find but other than that it is a great machine IMHO.

    Brother printers

I purchased over 30 of the Brother 1200 series for my school last summer. Some are networked while others are for individual teacher use. They have been remarkably trouble-free with both Windows and Macs. As for sharing USB printers on a Mac network, OS 9.1 has this built in as a control panel option. I look forward to the new models.

    1270 works very well

I have a 1270, use it thru the ethernet port with LaserWriter 8. Works like a charm. Recommended it to a few friends and they are all happy with it. I will never use a laser printer via USB. Networked via LaserWriter 8 assures good drivers, all manufacturer has to do is make good PPD.

    Love my 1270n

I've had my 1270n for about six months now and it has been great. Took only a few minutes to install in my network of Macs (OS 9 & X), PCs (Win2k) and Sun machines. One great thing about it other than price ($430) was the fact that it takes regular SIMMs as memory so I was able to pop an old 16MB module I had lying around to bring the total memory up to 20MB. I don't think it's possible to find a better 12ppm, 600dpi, cross-platform, network enabled printer that comes close to the Brother at it's price point.

    Brother OS X drivers=JUNK

I have a Brother HL-1240 connected by USB and can testify that Brother's crappy OS X drivers are a miserable piece of junk. Any print job larger than a one-line sentence just hangs in the print queue forever. I'm not the only one with this problem, either. Take a look at the reviews at VersionTracker:

    http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=10384

and the discussions at AppleCare Support. Brother knows about the problem, but seldom even answers email. The OS 9.1 drivers work, but they're kind of flakey, and they have few features. I will never buy anything from Brother again.

    Get a LaserWriter instead

I bought and quickly rerturned a low end Brother (no PS, non-networkable--big mistake). Absolutely Mac-hostile, tons of trouble with their printer drivers. Instead got a used LW 16/600 for the same price. Got PS, ethernet, 16ppm,the works. Has worked like a charm
