Apple-owned PowerSchool, which provides a system that helps parents check their child's grades and progress throughout the school year, is being used in about 2,700 schools, according to the Associated Press. However, the Web-based system is not cheap: $4500 per high school and $5 per student to implement the system, as well as a yearly fee to keep the system in place.

    price knockdown

Hopefully with apple at the helm, the pricew might drop. At steve's keynote, (NECC?), maybe they'll have a big discount like Webobjects

Price is relative. Get a better paying job and Apple's prices won't seem so expensive.

well, looks like the prices are still expensive when compared to PEEECEES, however I believe my user exxperiance to be worth the extra money, not that it would hurt to drop the prices ;)

    Inexpensive not cheap...

Cheap implies lower quality workmanship for a lower price...

    Re:inexpensive and others

First of all to the first poster who whined about Apple and cheap:
    - what happened when Apple bought WebObjects? The price dropped dramatically.
    - Mac laptops are cheaper than PC laptops. Period. Go configure a PC laptop with the specs of the iBook. (don't forget the battery power and Firewire)

$4500 is not that expensive. The problem with the whiners on this group is that they don't understand vertical markets. When you make a product for a highly specialized (i.e. small) market, things cost more than your average PC or Mac utility.

For a living, I work on products that cost almost a million dollars. Our customers gladly pay the price because they know it is worth it and they understand the amount of work that goes in to producing such a product.

    Relativity...

Many schools, and some states (West Virginia), use IBM AS/400 servers and software. If you would like to compare the prices of the IBM AS/400 server and software to the price of a PowerMac G4 server and PowerSchool software, I'm sure an Apple representative would be more than happy to help you. ;-)

    PowerSchool

I've investigated doing a PowerSchool implementation for our large urban district. POwerSchool doesn't have any really big clients yet, so we were reluctant to be their first. Most of their clients seem to be 1-3 school districts--ours is over 500.

That was some time ago. Maybe something's changed?
