updated 11:25 am EDT, Wed June 20, 2001

Blizzard Entertainment has released Diablo II 1.08, a new version of its wildly popular action/role-playing game for the Mac and PC. The new version adds the improvements, fixes, modifications, and tweaks that have been added to Diablo II in the Diablo II Expansion Pack—Diablo II: Lord of Destruction—which is expected to be released this summer. Among the changes are skill balance modifications, gambling prices based on the character level, inability to gamble for sets and uniques, mana and life steal effects reduced by half in Nightmare and Hell, increased the amount of gold a character can hold in the Stash, and more.

    Patch Sucks

The patch really sucks. It makes the game less fun. I have a sorcerus level 44. I spent a lot of time specializing in certain spells that now suck on h*** dificulty. For instance cromatic orb: the cast rate is limited and certain enimies are now imune to fire. Since I did not specialize in other spells through out the game (which now that the game play has been changed) playing at the same level I have been is near imposible. I am interested to see how other characters faired. The imunity to certain magic is what really makes it difficult since sorcerses usually don't do melee combat.

Any how this is my initial reaction to the patch... maybe I will get used to it. DII is a great game but this patch changes the gameplay *too* much.

    Overqualified

It could be worse. Imagine if you spent 20 years training for a career in real life, only to find that the economy changes and your skills are not up to date or in demand.

Best Advice: Learn a lot of different things.

    Gambling

No gambling for uniques or sets? Then what's the point of gambling at all? And without gambling, what's there to spend money on past the first few stages?

    but, have they fixed...

the jerkiness that I experience on my iMac 400mhz when I scroll around on the screen? That has been the biggest disappointment yet... I've tried all of the different graphics settings, and nothing seems to work. All I want is for it to be smooth like it was on D1... :(

    Buyers warning

For anyone considering purchase of Diablo2... You most likely want to buy this game because of the near fanatical rantings of your friends who already play this game.
BEFORE YOU BUY... go back and ask them again what they think of the game now.
I believe I am expressing the everyone's opinion when I say that the game is no longer playable. At least, if you do play, it's not fun anymore. All aspects of reward are now absent from the game.
I cannot express fully how significantly the game has changed. This is not the same game that won so many awards and loyal fans. You need only listen into any Diablo2 chat area to see what a disappointment this is.

    Whiners

The chat areas on Battle.net are full of immature whiners.

Those of us who really enjoy the game think this patch fixes a lot of problems and makes the game significantly better. I played for 3 hours immediately following the patch last night and was much more involved in the actual game play than before.

Gambling is still VERY helpful. Although sets and uniques are gone (and who cared about sets anyway?), rares are still available, and instead of always being useless base items, they now scale much better. For example, it is now far more likely to gamble for Gothic Armour than before, when you would have been gambling for crappy light plate or something.

It is also far easier to actually find stuff in the game. In 3 hours of NM Act 3, I found 2 very nice uniques, one gothic armour and one bow. I also had TWO flawlesses drop - completely unheard of. The pings last night blew pretty bad, but gameplay seems more fluid.

I am a sorceress, so I understand the complaints above, but I use a dual attack combining freeze and lightning, so the immunities don't wipe me out. It would be crazy to over specialize in one area anyways.

All in all, a very welcome patch.

    Patch

Quit whining. For the most part, this is an improvement. I have a 28th level Paladin with lotsa Zeal, so I understand some of the complaints, but heck, at least I can't get carried away with an attack anymore ... and, IAE, Diablo himself is still a pushover for Zeal.

Plus, it's a minor thing, but it is nice to be able to sell items for their full value without having to repair them first.

    a Choice

Nobody is forcing you to apply the patch. It might be annoying to decline it every time you log on, so play solo.
I spent a little time last night starting a new Paladin. *HE* had a good and rewarding time. Might have spent longer if the download had taken a LOT less time. Don't know how modem folks will deal with it. Unless the delay was an over-loaded server.
The changes I experienced improved the game for me. A couple of my older characters will resent some of the changes. I wouldn't say they were screwed over, any more than I was screwed over because there were no personal computers until after my children were born, or EFI, or comfortable office chairs.
If you are unhappy because they broke your favorite cheat, get over it. If you are bummed because your favorite tactic has been busted (eg: over 5 Zeal), my sympathies.
As for the problem of the iMac user with a jumpy screen: I only have a 300MHz B&W and I don't see that. Maybe after I dl the new driver from ATI and 'Rescan Monitors'.
