Wayport is extending its high-speed Internet services for business travelers by offering hotels the option of providing in-room/on-property wireless Internet access via 802.11b (AirPort). Wayport also say it offer hotels the option of providing wireless PC cards or USB-to-wireless adaptors for check out at a hotel's front desk. The new Wayport all-wireless service will be available for hotel installation within 90 days.

    USB - Wireless

Hmm, accessing an airport network through a USB device? Would be a good alternitive for those of us with older G4/G3 systems pre-airport

Wonder if consumer versions will pop out of the corners

I think if that comes to fruition we will see credit cards being snagged from another room because wireless is so "not" secure.

    Come on......
Sure, 802.11b has some holes when it comes to security, but how many people are going to rent a hotel room and a nice hotel (i doubt this service will be available in run of the mill motel 6's) and sit there with all the extra equipment the need to "listen in" on the wireless traffic, in the hopes that the guy in the room next to you will buy something with his credit card. it would be easier for you to stand at the front counter and just look at peoples credit card numbers as they are being passed back and forth.
this kind of paranoia is a little too much.

I've been to many hotels that already offer this service. The problem is they charge $10 for a 24 hour period. Now that's a rip off!!! If they would drop the price, I'm sure more people would use the service.

It always amazes me to see how many people are paranoid of someone getting a credit card off the internet or scanning a wireless network but have absolutely no problem handing the actual card to someone making minimum wage to buy $5 in gas or rent a hotel room.

    Why is this news?

WayPort has been offering in-room Ethernet for years, and 802.11b for well over a year. WayPort has something like 500 locations currently, most of them hotel properties with in-room Ethernet and 802.11b in public places, conference rooms, and certain floors. Extending 802.11b to a whole hotel just means a little more wiring, a few more access points. Where did this announcement come from? glenn at glennf.com.

    Wayport/Airport?

Considering that 24 hours of high speed internet access is available for less (far less at a Park Hyatt!) than a pot of coffee costs from room service - I think the $10/24 hours isn't that bad. Remember there are no phone connection charges that you would incurr if you dialed into a local pop offered by your own ISP!

I already book my hotels domestic and international based partly on whether or not they offer high speed internet. I don't care if it's DSL and an ethernet jack in the room, or wireless via Airport or something else. What I won't put up with these days is dial-up access at 56kb/s (if indeed it actually gets up to that speed).

The charges don't much matter. Most of us have company credit cards and travel on business anyway. God knows when I'm traveling for pure pleasure, I still would be quite willing to fork over an additional $10/24 hours for decent connectivity in my room. Wireless is a definite plus as far as I'm concerned. It's just one less cord to carry around and/or loose/break/etc.

Now where do I get a list of which hotels/cities they're installing this in?
