Ambrosia Software has announced Snapz Pro X, a Mac OS X native version of its popular screen capture software. "We're not just porting it," says Ambrosia el Presidente Andrew Welch, "we're rewriting the entire product from the ground up to take advantage of MacOS X's unique features."

    More realistic comment

"We're not just porting it," says Ambrosia el Presidente Andrew Welch, "we're rewriting the entire productfrom the ground up to take advantage of MacOS X's unique features."

The real comment should have been. We're completly rewriting it because we can't port it to Mac OS X since almost none line of our code is working with this new OS. We're going to do what we can with Mac OS X Window Server because we can't hack the system anymore. So maybe the first release won't have all the features that you have on the Mac OS 8/9 version.

    VNC hooks

There are some VNC hooks in Mac OS X (CGRemoteDisplay). I think they are going to use them, so there will be no problems with "porting" it.

can't you guys just shut up. when a product is carbonized, you're here telling that this company is lazy and should write the app in cocoa, now a company does it and they should carbonized it????

can't wait to have that app. and since it's cocoa, it will be in the services menu wich is so great! i'll be very happy to have this one and can't wait to have other os9 utilities ported to X!

    To quote Mr. Welch:
"...unless we state otherwise, you can assume that any features that were in Snapz Pro for OS 8/9 will be there in the OS X version (and some new features are being added, too)."

    Old Snapz Pro

The current version of Snapz Pro works in classic mode. I used it to capture a small movie already. There were some problems like the capture rectangle not showing up. But it did capture the movie. Just wanted to let you all know.

Snapz Pro X is not Cocoa

Just in case you want to know, Snapz Pro X is not being built with Cocoa, but Carbon. But it is built using Project Builder using Mac OS X specific features such as nib files and localization facilities. And to the pesimistic ones: Snapz Pro X will have the same features as Snapz Pro 2, and maybe more.

    Carbon? Sigh...

"take advantage of MacOS X's unique features"? None are specified, which means you must take advantage of them all. Only Cocoa can do that. One of the best developer features of OSX is the OO language which is native. One of the best end user ones is Services. Carbon has neither.

    "Just use Grab"

Grab is a piece of garbage -- if that's an example of what "powerful OO features" Cocoa offers, you can have them.

give me Snapz Pro for OS X!
