Prentice Hall PTR has announced the publication of "Mac OS X Web Server Handbook," a guide book by David L. Hart that helps the reader serve high-performance Web sites using Apple's latest operating system. The book, available from sources such as Amazon.com for $32, covers topics such as Web server setup, database integration, XHTML, XML, and e-commerce.

    Warning...

    This book is such a general gloss over as to be nearly useless for anyone but the most absolute neophyte. It doesn't really tell you how to do anything, it just tells you that it exists.

    Also, it was written before the release of OSX so it's just plain wrong in some instances.

    It's Just A Guide

    Why are they announcing this now? It has been out for a few weeks.

    Anyway, I had a chance to sit with during one of my longer lunch breaks and I fully agree with the latter comment. It's a high level gloss over and basically outlines some of the available software and protocols. The title is missleading it should've been titled "A Manager's View of MacOS X Web Server Capabilities For Managers that Never Heard of Unix and Do Not Care About Programming" but I guess it wouldn't sell to enough copies.

    Agreed...

    I saw the book last week and was highly dissapointed. It was thin and emaciated for a book that should be a tome. Nothing at all except lip service about security. Stay away from this one...

    The title says it all

    "Web Server Handbook". Hey guys, everyone knows apache comes with OSX. Get O'Reilly's excellent Apache reference instead. There is almost nothing that is MacOS X-only about that topic. Apple has chosen so many popular open-source tools that there is almost nothing Apple-only inside the underpinnings of the system. If you wanna make any use of it, refer to the more general Un*x titles. Just keep in mind that it is BSD, therefore some things about System-V-style init processes etc. do not apply... For the few specifics of OSX, check the usual places (stepwise.com et al.). Many books on OS X will come out and few of them will make sense.
    Just my $.02

    well... so would this be of any use to a neophyte? programming experience yes, web server experience nada.
