ZDNet: Apple legal going too far?

updated 02:00 pm EDT, Wed June 13, 2001

A ZDNet commentary notes Apple's unabated desire in "rattling legal sabers" against everybody from Mac enthusiasts developing software to larger corporations designing/manufacturing iMac knockoffs: "I've got reservations about Apple's eagerness to go after small fish apparently motivated by genuine enthusiasm for its brand; I have few qualms, though, about its handling of mock Macs."

Maybe I'll plagiarize these people's articles and try to get ahead like these "small fish" are. Pot. Kettle. Black. It's always fun to knock on someone else until someone steals THEIR intellectual property.

    He's right, more or less

I can see Apple going after the Aqua ripoffs. That's a trademark thing. Likewise for the whole FuturePower debacle. But going after the theme tool designers isn't cool. Apple has no legal grounds for it, for one; these developers have done nothing illegal, or even wrong. For another, it only hurts them in the end; overvalued as it may be, people like the ability to customize their own stuff (and it is their own stuff, from the time money changes hands) and the lack of ability to do it has got to be costing Apple some sales. I don't think it's right, but it's like with games: customization sells computers, and that's really what Apple needs.

    Apple is Perfect

Apple should do whatever they can to protect Apple. Their competitors are on their knees and will not see Paradise. We should help them in their cause.

give thier time and creative energy and sometimes money to develop every artistic thing u can imagine for mac os, they put up with slower computers overpriced for quality and b**** peecee users saying what a waste of time and talent and money all so they can express thier creative asskicking ability to use the macs witch they firmly stand behind and so apple gives them one across the face. i can understand the aqua bit but other themes, come on. steve jobs needs 5 across the face to wake him up to the crazee kool aid drinkers who fight preach and create for his pocket out of thier pocket every damn day. grow up steve, think DIFFERENT!

    Pity Apple legal wasn't

Pity Apple legal wasn't more careful when it effectively allowed Microsoft to develop Windows and relegate the Apple version of the GUI to niche status.
