Netscape 6.1 Preview Release 1 is the latest preview version of the Web browser and integrated e-mail client. The new version includes improved performance and stability, a new modern theme, improved Instant Messenger, support for LDAP, a new mail interface, and an integrated Personal Security Manager 2.0.

Hold on one second..

..I know everyone is going to rip this to pieces instinctively because, let's face it, Netscape generally screwed up big time by releasing Netscape 6 years before it was ready.

But, I encourage you to download this and give it a whirl... I just did, and honestly, it takes a lot for me to say this, but it's not nearly as bad as I remembered.

in other words, it finally ROCKS! yes , the original was like Mozilla 0.7, which (anyone would admit) was awfull. but now that Mozilla is getting better, naturally so is the Netscape browser.

It's improved

It's coming along fine now. The speed and clunkiness of the interface is greatly improved. The speed has also been inproved. I'd give it one or two more updates before the speed surpasses the IE 5. It may even get close to Opera speed. Opera is the download king and it's in beta. I get an average of 400k a sec on my cable modem only 120 on IE or Netscape, and have gotten as high as 900k a sec sustained. You can download netscape in about 20-30 seconds that's fast.

i think most of you Netscape 6-haters DEFINATELY need to take another look. if anything, download Mozilla 0.9.1 to see the difference from Netscape 6(moz 0.6)

You might bother so you can criticize something you know something about.

I'm actually pretty impressed. I'm one of the people who has posted complaint after complaint about Netscape 6 on these boards. This version isn't half bad...still a bit clunky, but nothing like 6.0.

It could be interesting still...

Netscape 6.1

Netscape has certainly improved their browser with this release. I downloaded it about ten minutes ago and I'm using it now --- it's great! It's much faster and the interface rocks. Give it a try.

lowered expectations?

I haven't tried this one out, but it still doesn't match the interface of IE and likely never will.

It seems as though Netscape lowered everyone's expectations with 6 and now that there's something halfway decent, people are willing to accept it.

Sick of the anti-Netscape

GEEZ, people.. if you just want to roll over and let Microsoft take over the browser world, at least do it quietly. Sure, OmniWeb is nice. iCab is ok. Are they preinstalled with Mac OS X? NO!!
It's stupid for people to say "Just drop it, Netscape..give up.." and then b**** when people say there's no software for Macs. Grow up!

Mozilla 0.9.1

This version of Netscape 6.1pr1 is basically the same binary as the final Mozilla 0.9.1 builds. They're good builds, however I'd rather run mozilla then netscape 6. Less ads ;)

However, Netscape 6 does have net plugins and support for AOL .ART images. I'll probably just stick these in mozilla.

BAH!

OH BOY! Netscape 6.1pr1 is out!!! OH BOY (feh!) People who use netscape are braindead fools, PERIOD. It is SO un-Maclike, even editing bookmarks is damn CHORE... can you just click on a bookmark's name and have it highlight and then edit its name? NO. And it is a PAIN in the a** to do any HTML with Netscape, it is just the purest c*** anyone can use. I swear, I feel like spitting when I even hear the name Netscape... and people who do use it are LOST in their own DOGMA. They say, "Well, at least it is not Microsoft", to which I say "AT LEAST IE SUPPORTS MAC STANDARDS, YOU BLITHERING IDIOTS!!!!!" Even a person such as myself who DESPISES MS has the good sense to use a browser that was MADE FOR MAC. Go figure! Oh yes, and iCab has MUCH promise... and Opera... but Netscape (or Mozilla, either one) is just so much decayed meat.

It's a pain in the a** to do HTML with Netscape 6 or 6.1. Is it because you don't like writing for Internet standards that you say this? The whole point to thr switch to the gecko rending engine was to be standards compliant. Mozilla is a good browser. Anyone bitching about it, obviously has not used it yet.

Mozilla supports internet standards. (yes period) Yes it has an UGLY interface. I personally despise netscape... and use IE about 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time I use mozilla. Why you may ask? Simple you can block cookies from sites to ever appear again (partial P3P intergration), its is fast, and it just mades webpages look nice. I could care less about editing book marks.

The only time I ever had to edit a bookmark was to set up keywords... so i can type "google os x" i get the results of google like that (wiht out a netscape page). Or to fix a nasty little problem i can type go macnn and i head off to www.macnn.com

People have to give a product a look at before they can crush it. I mainly use mozilla for two reason (no not cause its not IE... how ever I did manage a computer lab where Netscape was used cause my sup didn;t like MS). I use Mozilla to help track down bugs mainly in gecko so projects like http://qbati2.sourcefordge.net/ would have a great browsing experience.

Don't fool yourself Mozilla 0.9.1 isn;t a feild of daisys, a few land mines are flung around too. They are on the right direction. I would have to bet if they had a native interface for Win and Mac they could take a major part of the market from IE with in two years.

Netscape under X... download fizilla and play with composer and the prefs and you see why netscape is holding back... pref boxes are hidden behind the main menu bar... text you type in compose never shows up but exist... once Mozilla 1.0 rolls out i hope the carbon port of Mozilla would get more attention.

I see that was posted last ngiht... can't wait to get my hands on it... that might have fixed some of the poroblems form last time.... the the last fizilla build was .9.0.1+ oh well???

Netscape and OS X

The Fizilla webpage http://www.mozilla.org/ports/fizzilla/ reads Mozilla 0.9.1 branch build, corresponding to the Netscap beta. Please, if you use this build, make sure that the bug exists in the daily builds before you file. Many bugs have already been fixed on the trunk.

They are also close to nightly builds.

6.1 pr 1 buggy

i use netscape all the itme and downloaded 6.12 and though it is an improvmeent over 6.0 it is buggy. sometimes you cannot go forward or back in pages already rendered; no text increase/decrease; pull down menus stick.

What's your problem dude? Netscape presents us with an alternative to IE, which is better than nothing. Although I use IE 90% of the time, I still like to switch to other browsers at times (iCab, Opera, Mozilla, Omniweb) to test out webpages.

I don't know what your complaint about Netscape not doing HTML right is about. I do front-end web development and Netscape is one of the most standards-compliant browsers out there. You can't say the same about iCab, Omniweb, or Opera.

Alright, so Netscape/Mozilla doesn't provide us with native Mac OS widgets. However, if you knew anything about software development, you'd know that it'd be impossible for them to natively port such a large codebase to each platform they deliver Netscape/Mozilla on.

Plus, Netscape/Mozilla is FREE and open source. I don't think you can expect anything more from the Netscape/Mozilla team.

Good point why would one use Netscape of Mozilla... Mozilla is the real broswer development Netscape just adds stuff to it... not sure really... however I know like the mozilla icon in the browser...

If netscape includes plugins that work I suppose it is worth the download just to get them... (.art files should be killd)

Why use Netsacpe over Moz

i use Netscape over Moz simple because it has all the apps i need integrated into one app. insteadof having AOL Instant Messenger, Netsacpe 4.7, Outlook Express, IRC Client, etc all open, i just use Netscape -- i love it!!

Mozilla's true value...

... is Gecko. Gecko is a very complete rendering engine (the core of what a web browser does). Anybody can take this engine and wrap a new browser application around it. This could potentially solve the problems that plague Netscape 6.

ie=bloatware; why use it? i tried mozilla. if u have a g3 its fine. but on a well mainitained 250/604e its slow c***. so far the fastest browser for old macs is icab and it lacks many features so your best bet is netscape 4.77.

if u have a g3 or above run whatever the f** u want. just dont run ie. microshaft makes it. have u seen some of the web s*** microshaft is trying to pull with "colonization" of the internet. its a damn joke. our way or the highway. run our extensions or die. do busniess with our semi average products or go home. we give 100 million users the shittiest computer experience possible. we can at least do the same for the mac folks. go with opera u "netscape sucks" whining b******. what cant afford 10 bucks for a real browser? ive used netscaape 4.77 forever and the only time i needed internet exploders slow a** was when ordering games from bungie (now assimilated) i lament. otherwise i get around the internet just fine. cept for those damn mmicroshaft only sites who decided to build thier sites around the worlds WORST software bloatware shitware company!

Actually I didn;t think a reason would exist to use netscape over Mozilla... i must say I didn;t see any diff between the two... well ok I did see two(or three). The default page is netscapes home not mozilla and it does have an aim icon at the bottom of each window. One small diff i noticed between PR1 and .9.1 is that the tabs on version tracker appear under PR1 but not .9.1.

Your a fool, don't use a product cuase it is a MS product. IE is far from bloatwear. It has my of the useful thing iBad lacks... I use it I like it. I use mozilla I like it too. I hate iCab its just plain old reacks.

BTW why do you by bungie games if MS owns them... and if your computer is two slow for mozilla how can you run new games? Go to sleep troll, its well past your bed time.

(Used a Mac for 12+ years, 7+ of which online)

I am using 6.1 right now and it is really great. 6.0 was a disaster but this 6.1 version, with a slight speed boost in the future could be really great.

Moz =! to Netscape

Mozilla is NOT equal to Netsacpe 6. Those Netscape 6 is heavily based on Moz, there are two big differences:
1) Netscape 6 INCLUDES tthe imbeened AIM client
2)Netsacpe 6 can check AOL Mail.

those are two very important features for most people.

but it doesn't matter what rocks your boat (Netscape or Moz), at least were all supporting the same cause -- and not supporting Microsoft.

IE 5 (installed on my HD): 10,6 MB HD, does fine with 16 MB RAM, runs optimally with 32.

MacOpera: 2 Mb download, run very well/optimally? with 16 MB RAM.

And then Netscape 6 / Mozilla:

Product Requirements:
* Mac OS 8.6 or higher
* PPC 604e 266MHz or faster processor
* 64 MB RAM

...and 36 MB HD space.

I'd agree with not supporting anything from M$, but as long as IE is free to use and it doesn't attempt to convert us to M$N, .NET, WMP or any of those other marketing-driven pseudo-technologies they're brewing up, I don't have a problem.

The minute M$ try the same tricks on Mac users they are pulling on Windoze (XP) users, we'll desert IE by the boatload.

Oh, and Netscqpe 6.1PR1 is indeed worth a try - I use 4.77 normally, and am considering converting.

Netscape 6 / Mozilla 36 MB HD space.

That's a full install (messenger etc), browser only is 23.1 MB.

Netscape 6.1 rocks!

I've put it on my G4 at home and Win 2k laptop at work, and it really flies. Hasn't crashed once on either.

Way to go, Mozilla/Netscape geeks!

well

looks like its improving, Took long enough. Though, the installer really stinks. But I think it was caused by previous netscape installs. When I removed the stuff it worked. Interface still seems clunky but its still better than it was. Like the new style but the interface can update noticably slow.

What version of java is installed? Hopefully its java 2 and not the shlity creamy with a peanut stuck in it netscape java that one cares about.

Still think it can be better but you have to give some credit for the improvement. Seems like it is now usable and not a total disaster like it was.

Better get it going on os X...java 2 on os X netscape?
