dvGarage and Electric Image have introduced a $200 integrated DVD-based training system, The 3D Toolkit, that teaches 3D principles and techniques to visual artists in all industries. Hosted by dvGarage founder and former Industrial Light & Magic animator Alex Lindsay, the system teaches the essential "building blocks" of working in 3D and also offers high-end tricks for established 3D artists who want to take their work to the next level. The 3D Toolkit comes with a full copy of ElectricImage Animation System 2.9, which originally sold for $2,300 and was used to create 3D effects for "Star Wars: Episode 1" and other blockbuster productions.

I'd buy the thing if their web server actually displayed the page.

    Supports Plug-Ins

Doesn't come with any 3rd party plug-ins, but supports them. Geez, what do you want for $200?

Is this useful for 3-d titles at all? If not, which one is the BOMB?

Not worth it even at $99

The software is limited and not for use in production environments. Here is a quote taken from the EI website:

"The dvGarage 3D Toolkit is not intended to compete with Universe 3.0 and it will not support the use of 3rd Party plug-ins and shaders, nor will it offer an upgrade for native support of Apple's OS X. Only Universe 3.0 will include these, as well as the numerous other features like Modeler 2.0, Raytracing, New IK engine, Open GL support, Occlusion rendering, cross-platform compatibility and all of the upcoming new enhancements and upgrades."

Electric Image is on its last legs. With LightWave 3D and Cinema 4DXL already available on the Mac and Maya on its way, don't bother with this thing.
