MP3 Rage 3.4 is a new version of Chaotic Software's tools for MP3 enthusiasts, which lets users search and download music from Napster and Gnutella, edit ID3 tags, analyze MP3s and adjust their sound volume automatically to play at similar levels, export MP3 files to AIFF format for burning CDs, and more. Version 3.4 adds a Duplicate Finder tool to find duplicate MP3s, enhances the Multiple QuickEdit tool to make editing multiple files easier, improves the Track Numberer to skip files that do not appear to be MP3s, and adds additional enhancements and bug fixes.

Awesome

This is the best damn MP3 tool for the Mac -- the swiss army knife of MP3 utilities.

A MUST HAVE!

I don't like this app

The mp3 player is no more then the quicktime player, so you have no EQs and it will skip in OS 9; The gnutella client lacks a lot of important information; and it feels like this app was slapped together with RealBasic.

I'm not a fan

It works...

Most of the time, in ways that I care about. Meaning snagging files online. That is all that matters to me. The rest of its features I could care less about: duplicate files? I ain't no lame brain. Edit tags? iTunes. Adjust the volume of individual mp3's? iTunes, again. Export to .aiff? No thanks. EQ? Get 160 kbps mp3's (or even higher kbps) and a good pair of speakers and damn the EQ, don't need it. Any recording engineer worth her/his salt has done the EQ already. Given an EQ feature many/most end-users will only introduce phase distortion by over-equalizing. Like phase distortion? Think it sounds better? Fine, to each his own.

Nope... no coffee, ma'am... just get me to the files I want and let me download them, I can take it from there. The only Swiss Army knife I own is a tiny little keychain model with few features, ya dig. Less can be more, simple is always beautiful.

Humm. I would have to agree with the "I Don't like this app" post. EQ is important, esspecialy for a 3rd party MP3 player. Not everyone has the same Roland PA that a recording studio has...music sounds different on different systems. For example, powerbooks have tiny "tin" sounding speekers, if you have an EQ you can correct some of this by killing highs and mids. The EQ is also good if you have a subwoofer that is not pushing lows as much as you would like.

Personally I think Audion and LimeWire is a better combo then this app.

Hmm...

I would never use any built-in speakers on any Mac, even a laptop, under any circumstances... either use GOOD externals OR headphones. I agree that EQ is unnecessary IF you get a reasonably high kbps mp3 AND use decent speakers. End users do introduce phase distortion by over equalising, no doubt. But as the other poster said, if you like that, then fine. Use your crummy built-in speakers, fine. I have and use external speakers (and headphones for when I travel) for my PowerBook, and those very passable Monsoon MM-1000's for my minitower. EQ? Not on your life.

Try getting MP3s from PC/Unix users some time: 90% of the time the names are cut off because they're too damn long!
I use Rage to batch rename files, both going to and coming from the net: nothing beats it for that.
As for playback, a dedicated player is obviously better.

Gnutella WON'T DOWNLOAD

Every time I try a Gnutella download, it fails after a couple of seconds with 3.2 and 3.3. Haven't tried the new version yet, but I hope whatever flaw is in this program has been corrected. I'm a registered user and have sent email to the author about this problem over a month ago and unfortunately never received a response...

ID tags

the batch renaming facility, for both ID tags and file names, are what make this program the BEST. It can do nearly everything, from renumbering the tracks to batch renaming individual pieces of the tag. It's great for those of us that acquire a 30 GB collection of the greatest rock-and-roll ever, and want to organize the collection to set up as a jukebox.

Rage

You guys are right about the ID tags. Rage does this quite well... i wish they would put out a smaller stand-alone app that could do batches like this.

I'm ok with the fact that this app uses quciktime to play MP3's, but I use OS X as my default OS. If I used OS 9 it might be annoying. The Quicktime player has an EQ, is doesn't seem like it would be to hard add an EQ to rage. I think they should.

I have a phatty system connected to my powerbook. I use it to play mp3's when we have a party...someone wants to hear a song, they can suck it off the DSL line.

However, usually when we play hip-hop, house, drum & bass, etc we want to kick up the lows on the EQ in order to bump hard. To say an EQ is not needed is kind of dumb. You anti EQ guys sound like a bunch of old folks;). I'm a gen-x kid(adult?)... I want to shake.
