The Washington Post praises the new iBook's lightweight design and low cost, but questions whether a 5-hour battery life is actually achievable with even light use and notes its "smallish hard drive" as the laptop's one real shortfall.

    nice...

..dismissive comment at the end .

He basically says, "Nice job, Apple- you gave the REAL computer manufacturers something to shoot for."

    I get five hours...

Manage the power and it's fine. All of these pundits ought to realized YOU CAN BTO A 20MB HD! Sheesh. This is a comsumer machine that is darn close to pro specs. And check this - you cannot (w/o applecare) even config an iBook up to the minimum price of a TiBook. Also - anyone notice we haven't heard a peep out of Dvorak? Or am I just not looking iunder the right rocks?

    PC Laptops are junk

PC users are used to getting 2-3 hours max. from their laptop batteries as shipped.

If the PC world make products like the Mac, there really would be no reason to use a Mac.

However when you compare actual features Mac vs. PC you see the Wintel starts out at a disadvantage many more times in the Laptop arena.

Yes you can get like 500 different DELL laptops, and there are (currently) 2 Mac laptops - but how many different combinations of screen size and weight do you *need* to have?

    Dvorak

I was watching Silicon Spin and he made a brief comment that he liked the new iBook.

    No fwd delete/import

There is no dedicated key for it but there is fn-delete. And if you want fun try deleting whole words with option-delete or forward fn-option-delete.

AppleWorks 6.1.something imports MS Office. However, he's right, the AppleWorks that's pre-installed on this iBook doesn't have this I just noticed. Huh.

    A very reasonable article.

    It's part of the spin...

Listen, as someone who has worked in the print and radio medium, everyone has always got to remember that journalists are practically trained to find SOMETHING...h***...ANYTHING...that COULD be a 'negative' angle, spin, or feature of a story or product announcement so that they don't come off as slamming something negatively, or getting too gushy about it. It's practically in their blood.

So if a 10GB HD is all they could b**** about, let them do it. I survived two years with a 6GB HD in a G3 doing pre-press work. I think I can handle 10.

    2-3 hour battery life?

My 6 year old Dell laptop is good for 4 hours on its original battery. My new SONY runs for 6.5 hrs.

Where in the h*** are you getting this misinformation?

PS, no executive would be caught dead carrying an iBook - it's far from 'trendy'.

    RE: 2-3 hour Battery Life

My 6 year old Dell laptop is good for 4 hours on
    its original battery.

6 year old Dell, as in has a processor so slow and pathetic that a watch battery could run it for 5 hours.

My new SONY runs for 6.5 hrs.

As in an ultra thin book, that also has a throttle down pathetic CPU and no optical drive and no, etc.. and so forth...

Try comparing a full featured laptop and stop spreading your disinformation.
