updated 09:50 am EDT, Thu June 7, 2001

Sony today introduced its 4.1 megapixel Cyber-shot DSC-S85 digital camera.

The Cyber-shot camera offers a precision Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar zoom lens with a 3x optical and 6x precision digital zoom, a Digital eXtended Processor (DXP) 14 bit A/D converter, a 1.5" LCD, and a "built-in" memory stick for temporarily storing images as well as standard Memory Stick media slot. Due in August for $800, it will include a 16MB Memory Stick, an NP-FM50 InfoLithium battery (2.5 hrs), an AC adapter/charger, an A/V output and USB cables, and an application software/USB driver CD-ROM.

    Great... woo hoo...

Still no damned IBM microdrive support. Sony, get out of the RAM business!

    Real Specs?

Are those REAL 4.1 Megapixels? Or are they interpolated? A 16MB memory stick is joke for images that size.

    like the stick

I like the stick but I would like to see cheaper and better storage. Those sticks are expensive!

    memory sticks..

personally, I like the sony memory sticks.. I bought my wife the cybershot P-1 . yes..they are a bit more expensive.. but they have proven to be more durable than the Flash Memory cards we use at work with our Olympus camera. AND.. I am hoping that sony makes them work with the PS2 eventually.. (but that is just a wish)

    Memory requirements

Depends on if you use JPEG or TIFF to store the images.
High Q JPEG takes about 400-500K bytes for a 2 megapixel image, so count on a megabyte for a 4 megapixel picture. TIFF would allow just about one image per 16 MB at that resolution, though. (I'm assuming Sony allows some control over the image format, as most digital camera makers do...)

    Sony-only

Betamax, Minidisc, Memory Stick. Sony has good products, but I don't see the need to introduce it's own formats. Beta was clearly superior to VHS, but I don't know that their minidisc or memory stick are enough different or better than their competitors to justify the expense. Then again, I'm no corporate or marketing genius.

    NOT TRUE 4.1 MEGAPIXELS

And Sony isn't ready to cope memory-wise with pictures of that size.

Get the Canon Camedia--it's the best 3megapixel camera out there, usability-wise and functionally.

    There's a review at http://www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/s85.html.

The picture samples he has are ~1.6 meg.
