ExpireIt: Disposable email fights spam

updated 11:25 am EDT, Mon June 4, 2001

Digital Crowd has launched ExpireIt, a new service designed to prevent unwanted email. The service, which comes as both a Carbon and Classic client, offers disposable email addresses that can be set to expire by the user at any time. The free version of ExpireIt includes 5 expiring addresses, while additional addresses can be purchased in packages or unlimited addresses for $25 per year.

    So,

Does this mean that Digital Crowd has become the net's first virtual landfill?

Seems that way to me. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

    Not quite the same thing

I've not used MaxBulk Mailer, but I have used other bulk email programs for reaching customers legitimately. I maintain a one-way mailing list to inform customers of updates, etc. There are legitimate uses for bulk mailers. Most of them don't have the features that spam-specific mailers have, like trying a gazillion combinations of untested addresses and checking the bounces to see which ones are legit, for example.

    $25???

Ever heard of yahoo or juno or hotmail, etc. They are free. If you don't want to use it anymore don't check it. I just registered an e-mail address for my cat: maxcat@yahoo.com

    Wait a minute!

This sounds like a tool for junk mailers, not a tool to protect yourself from junk mail. You know, all those University Diplomas emails from $4379xzH@hotmail.com... I want to be able to KEEP my email address that everyone remembers, not change it. The spammers are the ones with the need to expire email addresses.

    Come on Guys...

You are all reading this story wrong. The whole concept is quite interesting... I can give out my own personal email address to my friends and family.. but when I sign-up for something online... I can give them a disposable email address... then if they a company or spammer sends an email to that address, I can just expire it that address. No more unwanted email. Go check out the site, read what they have to say... I downloaded the app... pretty nifty.

    How silly

when there are a number of places to register your own domain, and they will forward all the mail for that domain to the address you choose. Then you filter what you want. Register at MacNN as "macnn@somthing.com", and if they bug you, kill the mail.

    Why Pay for it?

Go to spamgourmet.com and get it for free. It's a great concept and they excecute it beautifully.

    What if ..

...you wanted to use a disposable email address again... 6 months after you expired one of them? Many "free" services don't offer it... but looks like ExpireIt does....

I guess it all depends... do you want something you have full control over from your desktop... or use some free service that may or may not be around tomorrow.

    multiple e-mails

I maintain probably 10-12 e-mail addresses, only two of which get checked regularly, if I'm signing up for something of questionable value, I sign up under an unchecked e-mail. If it turns out to be something I really want, I transfer it to a "good" e-mail address, no mess, no fuss, no problem
