Stanford has released Folding@home 1.34 for OS X, a distributed client application (console mode only) that allows users to help solve "the protein folding problem" by running simulations on their computer and reporting the results to a central database.

I'd love to use this, bu

I've been waiting for this application for sometime as I have done my share of protein structure study (my PhD thesis). Unfortunately my PhD is in Biochemistry and not computer science :-) I can't get the application to run (after setting up the config as directed in the read me file). When I run the executable I get this message "zsh: no such file or directory: ./dynamic.x" the dynamic.x file is in the same directory as fahclient.exe. What have I done wrong?

    Hrm

Try re-downliding it with OmniWeb and expanding the file with Stuffit. That worked for me all I had to type in was what was in the ReadME file. Open the ReadME file with Text Edit.

    OK...I D/L'd it again...

....and still have the same problem. I've now tried it on my G4 and iMac.....and I still get the "zsh: no such file or directory: ./dynamic.x" message.

    Any suggestions?

    Unpacking

One of the most common problems with running software is unpacking it improperly. Make sure that you expand it by either using 'gunzip' and 'tar', or use the StuffIt Expander for Mac OS X.
Also, make sure that you are running the program from within the directory you downloaded, as opposed to a parent directory.

So far, it has performed 1.6 picoseconds of folding after about 5 minutes, and is consuming 85% of machine resources.

    You must 'cd'

'cd' to the executable's folder, otherwise it won't work.

    How big's a work unit ?

I just had to interrupt the program after 6+ hours and lost all the results it had calculated :-( . Anyone know how many of the picosecond things make up a work unit ?.

I wish there was a %age complete status message instead of 5 lines of meaningless techno-blurb.

    Unpacking and permissions

When running *nix programs in Mac OS X it is important to make sure you have the right permissions. If you download a program that runs in console mode it is safest to unpack it manually instead of using Stuffit Expander. Safe the compressed file the hard drive, then gunzip it, then tar xvf the resulting .tar file. This maintains the proper file structure and permissions, and makes sure that Stuffit Expander doesn't expand a file that's supposed to remain compressed.
