Apple has posted documentation and sample code for developers covering the HID Manager, which controls gamepads, joysticks, and other input devices in Mac OS X. The release should bring input device support to games and other applications in the new operating system.

There's no brakes, no reverse, no roof... but it's shipping now! IOKit is also incomplete, both tools and documentation.

What have they been doing for the last year????

    For the last year...

Compare the Public Beta to the version that's out now. That's what they've been doing. A huge improvement if you ask me. Also, I'm sure they spent long hours trying to decide what to do about the Dock after so many human interface gurus hated it so much. In the end, the Dock is just very useable. Maybe it breaks some of the old rules of HI but who cares? Rules are made to be broken and that's one of the things Apple does best, right? OK, that was way off topic.

    it'll be worth buying it

almost, worth buying it, I'm not touching OS X until they add open music system support. no OMS in OS X and no audio inputs on any of the 2001 powermacs make a G4 with OS X installed the most worthless computer for music production since the sinclair spectrum! Games may be a cool way of passing the time but if you can't make music without booting into OS 9.1, OS X is a long way from complete in my opinion. I'm not running 2 OSs on my mac, I'm only running the one that all my apps work well with and for now that's OS 8.6 - 9.1. I do think in 2 years time a type 10 error will be a distant memory and all mac will be running any combination of software all OS X native. But not yet, they're a million miles off it being a useful all round replacement for the classic OS 'cos there's so much missing.
