In a letter from Outpost.com Founder and CEO Darryl Peck to its customers, the CEO explains that their acquisition by PC Connection means that Outpost.com "will indeed be here forever." The acquisition also provides Outpost.com with tens of millions in inventory and additional staff for its warehouses.

Outpost must be the same

Outpost garnered a considerable base of loyal customers by offering -often- the combined lowest price with immediate (overnight) free delivery. This was the formidable engine behind their success. Since this year, they have eliminated the free overnight shipping and their prices are becoming more and more LESS competitive. Let us hope that they manage to return to their roots and become -nce again- the premier source of computer equipment and electronics in the internet. By being bold AGAIN they can harvest an even brighter future.

Big fan of Outpost.com

Despite their changes in shipping prices recently, I was always (and still am) a big fan of Outpost.com for two reasons: their reported inventory was almost always correct; they ship stuff same day, regardless of how fast you want it to arrive. Most of the other online retailers, including PC/Mac Connection, have some kind of lag in inventory and shipping and email response that often meant that I'd find out days later that something was out of stock. Outpost.com, meanwhile, would deliver it the next day, or the day after for two-day shipping. They pioneered this kind of reliability: delivery time, not just shipping time, being the key dependable characteristic.

I just bought a new DVD player through them. Great price - among the cheapest. Best shipping price. And it truly arrived within two days even though I ordered it over Memorial Day weekend. They shipped Tuesday; got it Thursday.

Outpost is based in Kent, CT., so we CT. residents always got socked with the 6% sales tax. Even so, Outposts prices were still below those of MacConnection when you totaled everything up. As long as it stays that way I'll keep buying from them.

if Outpost's business model "was the formidable engine behind their success," why the h*** were they going into the tank? Answer: it wasn't successful. They were bleeding money from every o******. They may have pleased those of us who need instant gratification for free, but it could never last that way. Pay up, dot-communistas!

I still love outpost even after their shipping policy and still order from them frequently. The cost is usually minimal and they are VERY quick when it comes to delivery. I usually get what I ordered in a couple days with basic ground shipping even when you order very late in the day (eastern time).

Very satisfied customer. I used to be huge buy.com fan but their shady customer service weaned me off them

I will add that they have excellent technical support. I was in the market for an external disk drive, the rep was very friendly, very knowledgeable, and even (get this) took down a URL that I gave him and checked a web site WHILE I WAITED ON THE PHONE to answer a technical concern of mine. Yowsers!

returns

I just wish they'd stop the new policy of charging 15% when you return an item. I don't want to spend $500 on a PDA only to find out, for example, that the battery life is not what I was hoping for. If I return it I'm out $75... that's a lot of money. Unfortunately I am sure that this is due to people abusing the system, which is a shame.

bad experience

I ordered an item overnight on Friday 5/25/01 it was stated that it would ship the next business day and Monday being a holiday I expected it to be shipped Tuesday and delivered Wednesday. As of late Wednesday the phone support could not even tell me a tracking # or whether I would receive it on Thursday at all. I was forced to cancel the order on 5/30/01 and was guaranteed a refund. On 5/31/01 it arrived even though there was NO ONE at outpost that could tell me that. I refused it at the door since I had already purchased the item from CompUSA Wednesday night. The sad part is if they could have given me a tracking # or just told me it would arrive on Thursday I would have been able to accept the package My refund BETTER show up promptly.

Oh yeah it is now Saturday 8 DAYS from my order date and I just received the tracking # for my package

This kind of service is not a good sign.

Apple & Outpost

Outpost was great as long as they had investor money to piss.
A friend of mine ordered a G4 cube from them a while back. The thing was DOA. Outpost's policy: tough. Take it to an Apple service center.
My friend's policy: dispute the paiement, and never, ever shop there again. You pay good money to get a working product, not a boat anchor that you have to drop off at an inconvenient location and wait a month for an exchange with a refurbed unit.

Buh-bye, Outpost, it was fun while it lasted.

Apple DOA

I never had problems with returning defective products to Outpost. My wife bought a Palm Vx a while back that had a defective button, and we were able to return/replace it with no problem. Outpost even refunded what it cost to ship the defective unit back to them!
I believe Apple is actually constraining what Outpost can do with equipment that is sent DOA. It will be the same with any other vendor who isn't also a Apple Service Center, if I'm right.

Outpost.com and Education

Outpost.com blows for those in Education and who pay through "Purchase Orders"...we used to buy from them weekly until I called a few weeks back and was told "Yeah, we don't accept Purchase Orders anymore and we have lost basically 95% of our Education sales due to that!" Well duh Junior, no wonder you are hurting in sales.

The reason they don't take po's anymore is because school district would wait 3-4 months before paying for thousands of dollars worth of equipment. We got a rude awakening when they wouldn't accept our PO's due to non-payment of funds for about 15k worth of stuff. Our business office hadn't processed ANY po's so they had to live without their money for that period of time. I'd be pissed too.

It's Outpost.com's problem for allowing s*** like that to get ouf of hand in the first place. Put restrictions on that stuff where you have to pay within a certain period of time or your account is nullified or charge interest or something. Of course not everybody is going to pay on time (although we do)...however, that doesn't mean you close shop on it and lose your whole education market. Is it better to drop the whole Educ. side or simply wait for your money? Tough call, but, I do know that all other "major computer selling partners" do accept PO's...so what are they doing that Outpost is not?? Hmmmmmm
