Opera Software today announced the beta version of its alternative browser for the Mac, Opera 5.0b1. Compatible with Power Macs running Mac OS 7.5 (as well as with OS X in Classic mode), the browser offers support for 128-bit encryption, SSL, CSS1/CSS2, XML and JavaScript 1.3. The release expires August 1, 2001. A Carbon version is currently being tested internally with a public release scheduled for the summer.

    It won't launch....

.....from the dock! You have to double click on the application itself!

I love it when the notes on Opera says it supports the Classic environment...

    carbon opera

Although I really like opera, I don't see the point of launching classic just to use a web browser when there are browsers that run in X without classic. I'll use Opera again when it's caronized.

    Always fifteen steps behi

We finally have Opera for the Mac OS, only they made it for older OSs instead of making it carbonized right off the bat. I would have had more respect if they had coded it into carbon right off the bat. Why are they bothering to make a Classic app? It doesn't make much sense to me.

    It makes tons of sense

The number of OS X users right now is tiny. It will continue to be tiny for at least another three or four months (more likely, the rest of the year, but that's just my guess).

So releasing for OS 9 makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective; making it work in Classic means that the small number of OS X users can still try it out, and they'll release a Carbon version after OS X is the default OS...

    classic

It's a classic app because there are more people who know how to
    A) write a classic app and
    B) more users *don't* run X.

Use it as is for now and look forward to the carbon version. Opera is a great product. :)
