Verizon inks $2.4M contract for Macs

Verizon Information Services, a division of Verizon Communications, has inked an agreement with PWR Systems to implement and support more than 600 Macintosh G4 installations throughout the US in a deal that could be worth up to $2.4 million: "The new contract is a victory both for Apple's efforts to crack the enterprise market and for the solutions channel as a whole."

Verizon + G4s

I don't quite get it???? Is Verizon switching to G4s as web servers, or Web Account Servers, or are these for some totally other purpose??

My guess is that they're making phone books with these G4s. (?)

From the article: "Verizon Information Services, based in Dallas, is a print and online directory publisher with $4.1 billion in annual revenue. It publishes more than 2,300 directory titles in 48 states and 17 countries."

From the article it sounds like Verizon already had the G4s, and they simply bought a rather comprehensive service contract for them.

Expansion

The way I read it, Verizon was using them for the mid-Atlantic states, liked what they saw from PWR, and just inked a contract with them to expand to other areas, which includes buying more G4s to do it.

Apple

Benefit for Apple, yes sirree Bob. This is good news for Apple, but not likel for its customers. Apple has had ups and downs, but it didn't seem to affect the rate at which software updates were introduced... the most I'm concerned about at the moment (Mac OS X updates).

Verizon

I used to support 400 Macs at Bell Atlantic Video services and this is the standard way Verizon works with technology. The contract covers purchase, support, logistics, and maintenance. The contractor will bring staff in and maintain the contract for a set period. This is great news. The previous CIO for the RBOC, Ralph Szgenda hated Apple (he is now CIO of General Motors). He would write memos with the standard anti-mac bull and even went as far as offering us $5 million to change over to PCs. We said that if you give us $100,000/year, we can keep the Macs we have going for the next few years. Guess what, they decided that saving $4.8 million of 2 years was smart.

Maybe now ...

... enterprise companies will start realising the incredible amount of money most of them throw away on MS "solutions". While Apple's server offerings aren't ideal for everyone, I can think of many places particularly on the low end of the enterprise scale where Mac OS X and OS X Servers would make a powerful team that would save the companies concerned a ton of money.

Enterprise?

If those Power Macs are used to make phone books with, this deal is still within one of the �old� large Apple market segments - Desktop Publishing - so I wouldn't call it entering the enterprise market.

The largest producer of phone books here in Denmark has more than 400 Power Macs, so if the 600 Power Macs is all they got, it's not even a big contract.

you would see this in the press release...

In other words, it *IS* as the previous poster said - one of Apple's maintstay markets...but with a big name from outside of the DP industry. It doesn't really matter that it is just another DP client for Apple, the big thing here is that it is VERIZON - known as one of the local "Bell"s (Bell Atlantic + GTE + a few other companies all combined into one) - people (as shown in this comment area) don't automatically say "its just desktop publishing, everyone knows Apple is big over there" but instead say "wow, Apple is doing business with the #1 local telecom company in the US?".

Well, nice but.......

I agree with an earlier post. This deal is in the publishing area, one of Apple's few corporate strongholds. While I'm glad to see them hanging on to Verizon and slowly expanding, I'd hardly call this a 'monster' win.

Now the 23,000 iBook II's to Henrico Co. school district, now that's a MAJOR win.....

Apple faces an ENORMOUS uphill battle in the enterprise market due to lack of enterprise-level software. Microsoft has a stranglehold on internal corporate development shops. The introduction of Access and Visual Basic nearly 10 years ago was the beginning of the end for Apple in Corporate America. Just look around now, and start counting how many VB programmers there are. Literally millions of developers cut their teeth on VB. Its what they know. Over the past 10 years, MS has continued to refine their development suites, and then made them eminently affordable to the masses. They added Visual J++ (or whatever it's called) when Java became hot. They've built enormous, pervasive certification and training programs around VB, SQLServer and their development tools. They've scared everyone into becoming MCSE's for their server platform. Check the tech job listings in any major newspaper. Get certified in MS this, MS that. It's sad, but true.

An extremely high percentage of all INTERNAL (read that custom) corporate development is written to work exclusively with Windows. I worked at Unisys (major computer technology company) for 16 years. All new internal applications were being built with Windows front-ends when I left in 1997. I know that hasn't changed, as I stay in touch with old friends. h***, Unisys is even integrating Windows NT and Win2K into their proprietary mainframe OS. Worse, they've taken the lead on leveraging their mainframe experience to bring Windows DataCenter to reality. If you don't know anything about 'big iron', this may not mean much, but trust me, this is NOT good news for Mac in the enterprise. And let's not forget about all the third-party software you can buy out there that is Windows-only.

Hey, I LOVE Mac - I think OS X is cool now and will be phenomenal in another 18 months. I'll grant you that you can find Mac software to do many, many things that the general public and even general business thinks it can't. But cracking the enterprise is a gargantuan task. The one hope is that OS X will draw substantial attention from the Unix crowd, who are indeed corporate. If that can happen, Apple will slowly creep back in. But it's going to be a long, long battle. In the end, I doubt seriously whether Mac can topple the MS monopoly. Best I'm hoping for is to gain the true respect and admiration that innovative Mac technology deserves.

What company do you work for? The news is not that Apple sold 600 computers -- I'm sure they sell more than that every day. The news is that a major national corporation is taking Apple's products seriously enough to make an enterprise purchase.

This is a market that Apple is dying to do well in, and any story of a major corporation buying into it is good news for Apple.

Yellow Pages . . .

Well, US West was heavily invested in MAC's for their DEX and yellow pages business until the
deadheads (ala 1984) from QWEST took over and now everything is turning very pro-Microsoft. Most business people never think about the huge service nightmare that the PC servers take and downtime due to constant process overflows/crashes etc. They are also pretty much getting rid of their UNIX servers as much as possible.

replacement & expansion

One of those 600 G4s will be sitting on my desk. Some will replace older Mac systems, others will be switching publishing functions from Windows to Mac machines. The price tag includes some extremely nice high end peripherals as well as the basic computer.

(That's what configuring systems is about)

Last year GTE and Bell Atlantic merged to become Verizon. Mergers of this size take time to process. The regions mentioned in this article only cover a portion of the territory now served by this company.

Figure it out. Yes, it's Desktop Publishing- on an enormous scale.
