Mac OS X pre-installed beginning today

updated 02:50 pm EDT, Mon May 21, 2001

Apple has announced that it will begin shipping all of its Macs with Mac OS X pre-installed beginning today—two months ahead of schedule. The move comes in response to the positive reception to the new operating system and a desire to give developers a larger base of customers for Mac OS X products. New Macs will come pre-installed with both Mac OS 9.1 and Mac OS X, with OS 9.1 selected as the default boot operating system.

OS X on all new Macs

Can't help thinking this is a mistake at this stage. I love OS X, but isn't the default RAM on a standard iMac 128 MB?

Just enough for the OS - This will put of Joe User - when they try to use it - it will crawl - give a very bad impression.

Maybe Apple are releasing 10.0.4 on these machines? But still not enough RAM - is the default for the bottom-end iBook 64?

    That's great for Apple..

Great news for apple, not so great for consumers who may have a bit of trouble understanding two OS's (and their poor relatives, who have to offer tech support!).

All in all, though, it's super to see Apple delivering products ahead of schedule!

    AAck!!!

This isn't april 1st, is it? X has lots of potential, but I hardly think it is ready for Joe Six-pack. This is a bad move, IMHO! Couldn't they have waited another few months to fix the bugs?
