Jobs vs. Dell: Grumpy old men?

updated 02:05 pm EDT, Mon May 21, 2001

", 0, 0);

The New York Times examines the ongoing personal grudge match between the CEOs of Apple and Dell, Steven P. Jobs and Michael S. Dell. The article explores the similiarities and differences between the two executives, and speculates that the feud may be the result of the computer industry showing its age. "...all this counterpunching is best explained by the fact that the industrial era that the two men did much to create is ending."

    Dell's credit

    I think the Times maybe be giving Dell too much credit in creating this era. Dell was founded in 1984. By this time, the personal computer industry was still young and obviously evolving, but already well established. The Apple II was seven years old, the IBM PC was three years old, Compaq had been around for a year, and the Macintosh was just coming to market. Granted, the direct sales model is an important development, but I think we need to put Dell's contributions in perspective.

    Good Article

    I really respect Dell for its beautiful managerial work. It sure did contribute to the "shopping on-line era". Personalizing your own computers and getting really competitive price is good.

    However, I think the article was quite harsh on Jobs authoritarian leadership. I think he changed abit his way of "managing" since he came back. Apple is definitely listening to its customers. Look at OSX and finder. We complained, they changed.

    Overall, a very good article.

    Industry shrinking

    Yes industry may be shrinking but Apple is staying on top by offering easy to use hardware and software. Look at iTunes, iMovie, iDVD.
    Great software products. Apple is starting to focus on the digital hub business.
