FireWireDirect is now shipping its second-generation FireWire RAID storage system, which offers a cluster of two, four, or eight hard drives. The RAID solution uses the "powerful and speedy" Oxford 911 FireWire chipset, and allows users to individually check for drive availability and configure the unit for both RAID Level 0 and 1 (striping and mirroring). Prices range for $895 (2 bay, 120GB) to $3,595 (8 bay, 480GB).

I want RAID 3 and 5! Good prices. wonder if they can support 2 streams of uncompresed NTSC video for real time editing?

    Native Firewire

When will someone (Apple) create a native Firewire drive.

By the way I personally don't like the new site. Sorry.

    same as Granite Digital

this "RAID" product (raid 0 and 1, big deal) looks like it is just resold Granite Digital stuff. It looks decent, but GD was first, not firewire direct.

Apple won't be making a firewire drive, they will have one available when some other manufacturer goes through the work of making one, then they will take it and act as if they were the first one to do so.

I want to build my own FireWire RAID, how can I do this. I'm sure there are many people who have 10GB,20GB,etc drives around, why doesn't someone sell a kit for us?

    Don't Touch This Company

I'd advise anyone interested in these products to but them elsewhere. 3-4 months ago I bought a combo USB/FW card from them.. and lost the ability to print to my Epson USB ink-jet, even though it worked fine with a $2.50 USB card. They acknowledged that they had some driver issues and were working on a patch. Since the 4 months, I have written 5 or 6 polite e-mails, all of which are unanswered. I got took to the farm. I now have to buy another combo card, essentially doubling my cost for this function.

    New design NG

I used to go to 7 Mac sites on a daily basis to keep up on all the current Mac news. But thanks to the redesign and non-weekend reporting of MacNN I now have to only go to 6 sites -- bye bye MacNN....
