Their page crashes IE 5 for MacOS X on every machine I have, so therefore, they no longer get read, and probably is not the best link to publish from a Mac-friendly site...
Every time he opens his mouth it's quite obvious he has NO CLUE about the Apple strategy. h***, I'm not an analyst and I get it!
Many have said that Apple may not make their resellers happy due to this new competition, but most of them really aren't worried. I talked with my Rep at MacMall where I tend to spend about 200,000 dollars a year on new equipment and he wasn't worried a bit, I mean how can 25 stores nationwide do much dammage to Mac resellers, I can see in areas where the new Apple Stores are concentrated, like LA and Chicago, where established reseller shops might feel a little pressure, but if anything it will force them to really know their stuff and offer a wealth of services, if they have loyal customers, those customers will remain loyal, remember Mac users are probably the most loyal people out there when it comes to their Macs and the services they use in regards to their Macs. I'm sure those loyal people are going to be curious, I may make the 6 hour trip to Chicago from Cincinnati to check it out, but I also have a friend that owns a Quicktime VR publishing studio on Michigan Avenue a couple blocks away from a future Apple Store so I'm not going just to see the Store, man is he excited. The only people that have to worry are those resellers that offer Mediocre service, and those aren't the folks we want selling Macs anyway.
It's amazing how the clueless (neff) get published week after week. He obviously does not grasp the even the basic foundation of apple's strategy at all. Like the crack about not bundling Mac OS X sooner. Apple is not M$ and will not put put out an early adopter OS to the general public like M$ has done with every OS release in history. And then they "fix" it.
Andy Neff has always posed a negative view about Apple. Just ignore him.
I think many people are missing the point here. The stores themselves don't have to sell a single machine. They were concieved to promote brand awareness. Most of the area's these stores are being placed seem to have high "vacation shopping" traffic. I think they will cater to window shoppers because no matter where people buy their apple computer, the are still buying an apple.
anyone who has anything negative about apple is a moron and idiot and has no busines writing about anything ever again. how dare they blashpeme the holy grail and mecca of computing????
The article read that there were PROs and CONs to the Apple retail initiative. Given I didn't read anything in the CON section that seemed like he explicitly called a negative aspect, I think that this is looking pretty good. Don't you?
Time to pack up the rugrat and go find an Apple store :-)
Con says:
"However, he's worried that investors will perceive Apple shifting away from its status as a brilliant industrial designer to focus on retail stores."
That doesn't even make sense. Who would think that? It's quite obvious that Apple's store's are largely a branding move, and major profits aren't really the point. They're trying to force their way into the Wintel consciousness. If they just break even it's a marketing success!

Second guy is off base.
He worries about Apple not bundling OSX sooner, and also worries about conflict with the existing retailers.
OSX is widely regarded to be at the "early adopter" stage- it's smart not to bundle until the experience has been refined by us bleeding edge users.
Similarly, the current retail channel isn't working for Apple... a trip to the local Circuit City, where the demo iBook is missing five or six keys from the keyboard (!) is enough to drive that point home. I'd bet the vast majority of Aple system sales already comes from mailorder or online orders, and if Circuit City quits in a huff it will barely make a dent.
