Evening tech news (E3 edition): Microsoft has announced that its new XBox game console will debut on November 8 for $300, matching the initial price of its tough competitor, Sony's Playstation 2; Nintendo has announced that its new GameCube console, a follow-up to the Nintendo 64, will go on sale on September 14 in Japan and November 5 in North America; and Sony will preview the Macromedia Flash Player running on its Playstation 2 game console this week, which will enhance its Web offerings when Internet access becomes available to Playstation 2 users.

    Best of Luck Nintendo

I really hope they do well. The GameCube is the last best hope for Nintendo... It has to go. I don't want to look at Microsoft when I want to play a television video game. =(

    Nintendo rules

Don't worry, with the GameBoy Advance Nintendo will be the king no matter how well the GameCube sells...
Microsoft will have a big success in the USA but it will fail in Japan and in Europe I'm quite sure because there is too much US games on it and not enough european or japaneses. Plus Sony is already here and Nintendo will attract more users (cheaper and better games than MS)

    Nintendo will succeed

Why will Nintendo succeed? The current "crop" of console systems looks like this:
    32-bit Playstation One, running CD-based games ($100)
    64-bit Nintendo 64, running cartridge-based games ($100)
128-bit Sega Dreamcast, running CD-based games ($100? no longer manufactured)
128-bit Playstation 2, running CD or DVD-based games ($300 ...#1 right now in terms of abilities and performance)

The future shows us this crop:
128-bit Microsoft Xbox, running DVD-based games ($300 ...will be #1 in terms of performance)
    128-bit Nintendo GameCube, running DVD-based games ($200)

If you exclude out-of-production systems and systems using outdated (pre-128bit) technology you will see that come this November we will have only 3 systems vying for a US$10 billion market. While two of the three products are both priced at $300 (although the PS2 is likely to come down to $280 or $250 by then) and billed as the most powerful "computer entertainment systems" (call Sony and just TRY telling them the PS2 is a game console, you will hear them get EXTREMELY defensive claiming it is a "computer entertainment system" and includes a DVD player, CD player, game system, etc... regardless of the fact that play games is the only thing it really does well out-of-the-box (no remote = not a good CD/DVD player in my opinion, no need to get into the technical quality issues of the thing)). That leaves one left, the Nintendo GameCube, selling for 2/3 of its competitors price. To parents that figure is a BIG deal. The fact that it is a 128-bit system means it is "good enough" to hold its own against the competition without really competing with them.

The GameCube is to be marketed to the "younger" crowd (under 18) whereas the Xbox and PS2 are designed for the 18-24 crowd (the age group that spends the most on console gaming currently) - so in that respect the Xbox and PS2 are not competition at all. What I see as GameCube's ACE up its sleeve is its ability to use Gameboy Advance systems as CONTROLLERS! In other words, where with my PS2 I needed to go out and buy 4 controllers, each at $35 a piece, so my friends could come over and play TimeSplitters with me, in the world of Nintendo all kids will already own the Gameboy Advance (not a bad assumption considering the Gameboy's [legal] hold on the market) so to parents the GameCube will be perfect, keeping their living room free of the controller clutter that takes over houses like mine. Everyone who wants to play will already have their own controller (not only a controller but a 32-bit gaming system more powerful than the PS One with effects abilities bringing it closer to the power of the N64). I would personally much rather have my little brother carrying around a Gameboy in his backpack than a gun...while it is a shame we have to worry about our youngsters and guns, I honestly feel video games are a strong enough force to keep kids AWAY from guns (you can'

    Nintendo will ... cont.

...I honestly feel video games are a strong enough force to keep kids AWAY from guns (you can't worry about killing your teacher when your mind is too focused on how to get passed the level 5 boss!) although I'm sure most people haven't though about this and will likely call me a fool. I'm not saying video games are the answer to our troubles in the US, I don't believe they hurt and I do think they help.

    Sony Vs M$

well so far Sony has a very good consumer trade mark, while M$ is well known for its corporate job and its Bugs. Even with an huge amount of marketing I don't think M$ will beat sony. For Nintendo their core users are much younger and they just want to push their advantage with the Cube, According to me the Pokemon is a very good game i use to play some time to time...

    X-Crock

I would certainly encourage all Mac users to do the right thing.. don't let anyone buy an x-crock. One persuasive argument is that m$ is going to a model of software that you rent it each and every year. With connectivity a big thing, it's easy for them to "police" you.. don't pay up, this year's rent, they can reach out and disable the software. That's the prospect with a x-crock.

The other factor is to try and hold off on your Halo urge.. wait the necessary 6 months for a Mac version. The more x-crocks that Halo seels initially means that the less incentive they have for getting it ported to peecees and eventually some day the Mac.

    XBox, Halo & Others...

From what I heard, Halo went from what could have been the Tribes 2 killer in both the graphics and gameplay department to basically Quake III(BTW:Q3 is a great game, but Halo was supposed to be team based). Plus, the XBox version won't have multiplayer support. Way to kill a game destined for greatness M$. Anywho, I have a sinking feeling that the XBox thing will go the way of the Philips CD-i and NeoGeo. They excluded USB/FireWire support on their console because they didn't want people thinking it was a computer(They didn't like the thought of a keyboard/mouse hooked up to the XBox). Great!!! Ask anyone who plays a lot of first person shooters and see how many like playing with a big clunky controller, zippo! Sony did the right thing with including a BUNCH of connectors that aren't necessarily NEEDED but are available to the user :-) I love my PS2, and doubt I'll be buying an XBox any time soon. Besides, game developers would be idiots NOT to bring an XBox game to PS2, with an installed user base of 10 million+ and growing everyday, it's pretty much a no brainer.

P.S. Did you all see that Linux developers kit for the PS2, AfterStep on a PlayStation :-) Now if we can just get Apple & Sony together...
