RAD Game Tools has released the Miles Sound System for the Mac, which supports all aspects of audio: digital output using a custom hand optimized assembly sound mixer, 18 DSP filters, MIDI support with a built-in software synthesizer, red-book audio, MP3 and ADPCM support, full 3D audio support, hard drive and CD-ROM data streaming, and more. The Miles MIDI subsystem supports full interactive MIDI files, DLS using a built-in software synthesizer, and compressed instrument sets.

The Miles Sound System has been used in more than 2,500 PC games over the past 10 years, including Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - The Fallen, which has been delayed on the Mac for months as Simon & Schuster waited for the sound system's release.

    1000 Miles of B.S.

... no screen shots, and tons of talk ... never heard of it. First time Mac users ( if they can find the demo ) are in for a surprize with this stuff from the looks of their web site ( Beware! Hazardous Clunk! )

Someone please tell me different, but I think I can spot trouble when the WINDows BLOWS.....

    Demos? Huh?

The Miles Sound System has been in use for as long as I can remember. Developers have been using Miles to do audio functions in their applications since time immemorial, long before OS folks like Microsoft ever thought it was a good idea to offer a competing API.

Having said that, the download section doesn't have demos of the Miles technology running on the Mac, it doesn't talk about whether the functions on the Creative card for the mac are supported, etc.

There is no 3D sound API on the mac; those who need its functionality need an API like this. But if the support for the mac includes all the hardware acceleration functions and support for the various surround-sound configurations, then this just might be the first real tool on the Mac for doing proper gaming audio.

Cross your fingers and pray for Mac OS X support.

    3D sound API

There *is* a 3D sound API on the Mac: Apple SoundSprocket, and it's free!
    However, there's no X version.

    3D sound API

... and there is Ian Ollmans SoundTerrain. Which also is optimized for the G4. I think he his working on a new version ala OpenAL aswell.

    Miles Sound Library

A lot of product depends on Miles, and having a Mac version removes one more hurdle to seeing Mac ports of PC products. Why anyone would view this as a negative is beyond me. The facilities Apple has provided thus far are sadly lacking, so hopefully Miles can rememdy this to some degree. Apple still needs to step up the plate, however.
