Morning tech news: Days after releasing FileMaker 5.5, FileMaker has announced that Handspring has purchased a site license for the software; Intels' Pentium 4-based Xeon processor is expected to hit 2.4 GHz next year; Eazel, a company that was working on making the Linux interface more Mac-like, has closed its doors; and Sony and Real have partnered to bring streaming audio and video to the PlayStation 2.

Real? streaming? Does anyone still use that c*** app? Real tags its users and every downloads they make and the quality is far less superior than Quicktime... well...they had to pick a PC company...
Personally I refuse to use Real since they lied about tracing their users, I removed the player 6 months ago and just un-bookmark sites that use the Real player...also always a good idea to email webmaster and ask them to add quicktime.

Streaming on the P2? hasn t the P2 got a modem instead of the Ethernet port... streaming video at 56k must blow... can t be for games, must be for some sort of video advertising before playing games

    wrong Eazel

Eazel is not an iDisk replacement. Eazel is a group of developers for Linux file manager Nautilus.

    Real

Yes, a lot of people use Real. You see, they know how to market streaming technology. This is quite unlike Hollywood Frank and his band of lemmings.

Sorry. Thanks for playing. One and the same.

    Eazel was more than that

Eazel was more than a disk storage service like Apple's iDisk. It was a company formed by ex-Apple and ex-AOL people who wanted to make using Linux as easy as using the Mac. They have developed add-on to GNOME they called Nautilus which was similar to Apple's Finder for viewing files on the system. It also had an integrated web browser (Mozilla) and many other features. The software was release under the GNU license and was completely open, so their business model for making money was to provide services such as the those similar to iDisk. Unfortunately, the couldn't get anymore funding, and now they are closed. This doesn't mean Nautilus is dead, as the project can be continued by others since it was open source.

    Eazel, Real

As has been said, Eazel was a company that developed a GUI for Linux - that was their focus and only real product.

As for the comment above about Real and the PS2...the PS2 does NOT have a 56k modem. Also it does not have an ethernet jack. Huh? Simple - they are going to have an optional card that you insert. From what I have heard it will be integrated with the hard drive they are releasing later this year. Basically you insert this hard drive/ethernet combo into the Cardbus-PCMCIA-based slot/hole in the back of the PS2 and the functionality of your PS2 is instantly upgraded. It is also likely that through the hard drive the use of the USB and Firewire (i.Link / IEEE 1394) ports will become more viable. In any event, I don't think they have any plans on releasing a 56k modem, but I could be wrong about that, maybe they'll just enable USB based modems. In any event, wait and see what happens this fall - that is when things will get REALLY interesting. Oh, Sony is also working on licensing an IR remote control for the DVD functionality, and if you haven't bought a PS2 yet you would likely be wise to wait until the fall to see what happens (I'm guessing either lowered prices or the hd/enet card and remote will be included free). Point is, the fall buying season is definitely worth waiting for.

    Eazel

Pointing to Eazel's failure and associating it in some way with the Mac is misleading. Eazel was just putting a GUI on Linux. There was _nothing_ about Mac in their mission. You might as well say they were trying to make Linux more Windows-like. Looked most like Netscape 6, if you ask me.

    Eazel & MHz still...

I'm glad to see them go. Mac interface on Linux? Mac interface on Unix? Their efforts would've been better spent on developing Aqua or or advocating an x86 version to the brass at Apple.

No comments about Intel processors, & how Macs are increasingly, painfully, relatively slower? Sure the G4 does more per cycle, but it has SO FEW cycles/time in comparison. Come on, Apple, Motorola, IBM, whoever! I want to buy another Mac!

    PS2

There was an article yesterday about Sony tying in PS2 with AOL high speed. Don't know if its exclusive. But if true, its very very bad news if it is exclusive with AOL only.

    G4s can't compete w/ Xeo

Sad, but true. Mind you, Xeon systems cost a lot more, but a 1 GHz G4 would get creamed by a 1 GHz Xeon. And when you start getting into the high-end server space... like quad-Xeons and 8 and 16-chip Xeon systems, byebye Macs.

Then again, Macs were never billed to be such high end systems. They're for consumers/prosumers.
