Iomega has announced that its Peerless removable-storage drive, slated to ship in early June, will come bundled with MGI PhotoSuite, Aladdin's ShrinkWrap, and Iomega's QuickSync software. The Peerless drive will ship in 10 GB and 20 GB capacities for $360 and $400, respectively.

    I dunno ...

... if I would trust this thing after all the reported problems with Zip and Jaz drives.

BTW, what do you guys recommend for backups other than tape drives? I'm looking at DVD RAM and a Fujisu MO drive. Any comments?

    Kinda silly

These things are nothing more than 2.5" notebook drives in a hot swap-able mechanism. When you consider that you can buy the raw drives listed above for $99 and $125 (street), the $360 and $400 price tags are kinda silly. Though I'm sure Iomega executive$ don't think so..

Now, how long will it be until someone comes up with a similar FireWire solution for much less money? Some sort of quick clip-on IDE-FW interface -- or even a device where you simply slide the raw drive mech right in, a la "The Sixth Day."

The drives themselves will not cost nearly that much! The quoted prices are for a drive and a dock. If I remember correctly (sorry, I have no link to offer) "replacement" drives are to sell for at or under $200 for a 20GB model, which is not so bad at all. These are also not bottom-of-the-line drives; Iomega has partnered with IBM to bring this product to market.

    Firewire solution

I just put a standard (£6 or $9) removable drive bay in a Firewire case (case about £70/$100). I just buy £90 ($130) 40 gig IDE drives and swap them in/out. Total cost with 2 40 gig drives, around £300, and another £90 per 40 gig (or I can put other 3.5" drives in). It's hot swapable in that once a drive is in the bay, I can plug/unplug the firewire connection, but I do have to switch it off/disconnect firewire before switching drives (about a 10 second job).

    For Backup, Go MO...

I've got MO Cartridges that are nearly 10 years old, and except for some poorly manufactured SamSungs, I've never seen on e fail. The Fujitsu drives and media are exceptional in quality and come in everything from 128 MB through 1.3GB, meaning that you can choose a size to fit the backup without waste. For larger backups, I recommend buying a Maxtor 80GB hard drive, converting it to FireWire, and doing short term backups to that, then archive to MO or CD-R when you're no longer using the data actively.
IOmega at one time seemed a pretty inovative company creating new types of media, but now they are just repackaging their old inventions or worse, just repackaging hard drives and CD-Rs. In retrospect, their media has probably been the most problematic ever made, with high failure rates for ZIP and JAZ, not to mention Bernoulli (what can you expect from glorified floppies), so going with hard drives from IBM, may be their best move yet...

    Burned by Iomega

too many times: data loss, money loss, time loss, and aggravation from them. I had to pay for Jaz "warranty" service because they wouldn't even SPEAK to me until I paid. Then they agreed that they should reimburse me but did not do so. A call a week for a year: I got SOME of the money back. You cannot imagine how much aggravation they put me through for a product theat died shortly after purchase and took several disks with it. I've heard too many horror stories from others, too. Mostly with Jaz and Zip+, but I wouldn't trust the comppany as a whole. They got too big too fast is my theory. And look at their home page... they have lost yet ANOTHER class action suit. Affecting everyone who bought a Zip drive or built-in Zip from 1995 to 2001?!?

I'd like to know the pricing on the 20 GB cartrdiges, but for now, I'll stick with Orb. Not necessarily a better product than Iomega Jaz--but cheaper!

The street prices I quoted are for IBM Travelstar drives. I use nothing else. If Iomega has partnered with IBM (which makes perfect sense), then their price should be even lower. The Iomega site has no further pricing or speed information, so we'll see..

    Run away!...

...from any Iomega product. Never again. Let them die the corporate death they deserve. I bought a Zip drive a few years back and it died after a half dozen uses (they were over the course of a year, as I only used it for backup, but it was still only 6 uses).

Then my keen eye for removeable storage fiascos fell upon the Castlewood Orb. That died even faster.

I'm trying to get by on CD-RWs for backup now. Someday, someone will have a reliable high-speed, high-density removeable solution, but I haven't found it yet.

    Firewire Solution

Anyone have any tech specs and sources for the firewire solution mentioned above. I'm not a technical illiterate, but I don't assemble components daily either.

    Zip

I have never had a problem with there Zip drive. I have used mine for 4 years with NO problems and I have used 3 at work and 5 at school. None have broken down, or acted funny. they seem to be of good quality and are great for transfering larger files back and forth. I ould go with CR-R(W) or MO for back up however, and I would not recommend a zip or other Iomega product unless you want to transfer files from one computer to another that can't be easily networked.

    Just my 2 cents
