Ecrix today announced that its VXA-1 FireWire tape drive, announced in January, is shipping in volume and is also now available at the Apple Store. The VXA-1 FireWire drive currently sells for $950 (includes $200 rebate). The company also noted that Mac users account for 25 percent of its sales.

    re: reliable?

They're pretty reliable (and very fast for tape). I was an early adopter (got mine in March or April of 2000). I had some problems with it for the first few months (mainly compatibility issues with Retrospect). But Ecrix (pronounced "eh-kree") seems to have ironed out most of the issues with firmware updates over the last year. Make sure you use the latest version of Retrospect, and the latest drive firmware, and you should be okay.

I guess my only complaint now is that Hard Drives are getting so big you usually need multiple VXA tapes to do a full backup of a newer drive. And while HD prices have plummeted, Ecrix's media still costs the same (about $70 for a 33/66 GB tape). Ecrix, please consider lowering the cost of media for your consumers!

    Great Tape Drive

I have used Ecrix VXA drives for quite a while. In our company, we have 10 of them, 7 internal drives, 2 external SCSI LVD, and now one FireWire. All perform flawlessly. We just got the FireWire model last week and after installing the Retrospect updates, it worked perfectly. (The other 9 drives are connected to Dell servers. If only Retrospect for Windows would backup Open Files...) Ecrix is a great company to deal with. The FireWire model is currently connected to a PB G3 WallStreet with a Newer Tech FireWire card, so I would think any Mac with built-in FireWire would perform even better.

    Ecrix/Apple Store

But of course, buying throught the Apple Store will likely cause you to pay Sales Tax.

    Probably French. Pronounced "eh-crih."

We've had an LVD drive for about six months, and have been very happy with it on a B&W G3/350, using the drive to back up a Cube on the same 10/100 switch. We get about the same performance over the LAN on the Ecrix as we do on a DDS-4 DAT drive. I installed X on the Cube over the weekend, as well as Dantz's Retrospect Client for X, and it happily backed up the whole (X + Classic) hard drive at 140 - 150 Mbyte/minute.

We recently added a FireWire drive to another Cube, and it has been fine as well, though it's really too early to tell. Ecrix says they're trying to decide whether to go with a faster LVD-to-FireWire bridge chipset or offer a native FireWire drive. The latter sounds.... sweet.
