OT 2.7.6 has Access Manager 1.1.1 issues

Sean McBride sent a troubleshooting tip about the recently released Open Transport 2.7.6:

After installing it, my internet connection no longer worked. I am using Sympatico (Canada's largest ISP) and their Access Manager 1.1.1 software. Putting OT 2.7.4 back did not help. I had to reinstall the Access Manager software. I don't know why it was necessary, but it fixed it. Note that when you reinstall, you will need to reenter your username and password. Friends have also had this problem with past OT updates. It must be something wrong with Access Manager.

Eric Chamberland notes that the Access Manager Installer patches Open Transport in order to provide PPPoE functionality for its high speed DSL service. When a new version of Open Transport is installed, Access Manager, or your ISP's preferred PPPoE software, must be re-installed in order to patch the new copy of Open Transport.

    yeah, and...

    this, from macsonly.com, today:
"Open Transport 2.7.6 Installer and DSL Software Glitch: Dale Mericle had a problem installing the new version OT 2.7.6. To use DSL his DSL/ISP, Nevada Bell Internet Services, had sent him Mac software called NTS EnterNet that placed 3 extensions in the system folder: EnterNet, EnterNet Extension, and EnterNet 300. After using the OT 2.7.6 installer the extension EnterNet 300 was suddenly no longer there and he could not make a connection. However, uninstalling the DSL software and reinstalling it fixed the problem."

yet another reason to get a router and dump stupid PPPoE connection softwares like MacPoet and EnterNet, they suck, get a router and use it to connect to your DSL service... and don't whine about routers being too expensive, they are worth every penny.

    OT 2.7.6 & EnterNet

This is not an OT 2.7.6 or an EnterNet problem. Access Manager 1.1.1 is EnterNet 1.1.1.

Whenever, you install a new system or a new Open Transport, you have to re-run the EnterNet installer because --

Enternet patches "Open Transport ASLM Modules" in the Extension Folder to add EnterNet as a connection method.

Check the last modified date on this module. If it is later than the creation date, Enternet has patched it, otherwise you need to re-run the installer.

    OT 2.7.6 logjam

On my iMac Y2K DVSE, running OS9.1, I expected to have to re-install Enternet. No suprises there... What I didn't expect was to have my internet connnection systematically and emphatically keep tell me... "contacting [insert Server Name here]... waiting for a reply." without ever getting said "reply." Reverting back to OT2.7.4 and re-installing Enternet solved the problem. I'm not the only one with this phenomenon, as I've had two or three friends tell me they've experienced similar non-performance issues... On the other hand, Carbon Lib 1.3.1 doesn't seem to have had any effect - positive or negative - upon the performance of any of my Carbon apps... Not a huge deal, but big enough to make me wonder what's really the point of upgrading OT when it wasn't "broken" as far as my machine was concerned...

Why should you install OT 2.7.6 --

Apple said two things about the upgrade --

-- "resolves a minor issue that prevented some applications from behaving as expected."

-- recommended that all users install the upgrade

Thing about it, Apple is doing an update to a core module and recommending that all users install it for a "minor issue", and they are not saying what the issue is.

Apple does not issue updates to core modules these days for "a minor issue" and is "does not behave as expected" a euphemism for crash, security hole or some else untoward ?

    Access manager and iDisk

I am using Sympatico's Access Manager to connect to the net. Every time I try to upload a file to my iDisk space on Apple's server the transfer crashes my machine just as the upload is nearly finished. Anyone know the solution to this.

    Thank God for OS X

With OS X we can finally get rid of PPPoE connection programs. The built in networking works great with Sympatico High Speed. Kudos Apple!

    hmm...

OK, so where can I get the old version of Open Transport? This is insane; I can't access AOL Instant Messenger (stops at Checking Name & Password) and some websites (including my own, which is rather annoying since I'm trying to update it). Fortunately, e-mail via Outlook Express, macnn.com, and IRC still work.

And I'm not sure what you're all talking about "reinstalling EtherNet"... for my ISP I just use the Remote Access control panel that came with the OS; it has nothing to do with my ISP's software (since they didn't give me any).

I thought booting into OS X might work, but it was the same there: can't log onto AIM, can't access certain websites (e.g. www.boardhost.com, www.mydomain.com).

    Re: Hmm...

Well, everything seems to be working now. I didn't change a thing. All of a sudden AIM works, and those web sites work. Not sure why it didn't before (I had friends who were able to access them while I couldn't, so I knew it wasn't just that the sites were down). Whatever works.
