I'd like know what you mean. I've been reading MacNN for years and for the most part, they follow the straight up facts. Almost everytime they are pretty non-opinionated. I've only noticed a few times when they are way off base.

Of the three Mac sites, MacNN is definitely the one to check out. certainly not MacInBitch or BillBoardRental.

Expect "eh!" / hope bes

I check out MacNN frequently (2 or 3 times a day).I hadn't heard of NewsFactor before; but based on the headlines on the home page and the blurbs I see, it looks like they cover an interesting gamut of stories.

Seemingly it won't affect MacNN in a detrimental way at all - it would be even better if it did indeed enhance my daily resource for Mac news. Wait and see, I guess.

Sorry but the above is the worst part of these (anonymous) posts. MacNN has been a very good site for Mac news and updates and while they've made an occasional mistake, it's been my experince that they're head and shoulders above the rest of the rumor/news ssites. I say credit where credit is new and I look forward to seeing what's next.

MacNN Jumps the Shark

It's always a bad omen when a website joins some "network" or "ring" of sites with the intent to make their site better. Look at MacCentral; it used to be a halfway decent Mac news and opinion site, now it's just a clearinghouse for press releases and 2/3 of the screen is relegated to annoying ads.

I hope MacNN doesn't go this route, but history is not in its favor...

Aside from what the News Factor Network can bring to MacNN, NFN and it's readers will benefit from having a general Mac news source, including a link to MacNN. Anything that helps expose Wintel users to the lickable goodness of our platform has to be a good thing. Otherwise, they're stuck reading the occasional biased Mac article at news.com, such as their "review" of QT last week; what a joke!

Okay, my turn...

I am not quite sure what the network will bring, but if the same People still run it that used to and will continue to do so, then we have nothing to fear. Monish, Misha and the old gang will do a good job as they have done for years. years, that is a term that not many sites, especially news sites can say they have been around for. I remember way back when MacNN started. It stodd against the crowd and gavev fast news, no compromises (in content and load speed), and was run by long-time mac supporters. Through the years, MacNN has grown and Matured, unlike other publications. They have taken the chances to publish material that others would not, and have always tried to maintain a very high level of objectivity and professionalism. And, if the original crew Monish) is still there, I have little doubt he would let anybody push the site around!

Here is the really interesting question that we should all be thinking about. With the cutting edge stance of AppleInsider, will the Network allow that to continue under their umbrella? I hope so, because Rumorz, though updated a LOT more, has very little true information.

I wish everybody there the very best of luck. Keep up the good work.

One more thing...

The last couple posts that talk about the look and feel of this site have absolutely no justification to say so. They do not run a site like this, they do not have to maintain user and ad space and furthermore it is not theirs. If you don't like the look and you have something better to offer, then well, so it... or shut up and crawl back to your hole. There are far more professional ways of saying that one dislikes the layout or look of the site than to say:

Mac News Period

No one's yet said it but I have a very simple bottom line. I read MacNN for Mac news. Period. If you give my anything other than Mac news on MacNN I'll simply seek my Mac news elsewhere from now on. If I want PC news, I'll read a PC site. Which I never do. Which is entirely the point.

Congrats on Macnn for getting associated with another news organisation. I wonder if this will challenge my favourite site for Mac news? They are pretty shy about it but by jove they have got it, the most unbiased most effective news design site ever.

Yup, macsurfer is my top source for news portal, then Macnn. Nice to see somebody's getting the web right.

MacNN has ego's!

When MacNN redesigned their site to it's current look I offered several suggestions as to how to improve it. Being a web designer for 6 years I know what I am talking about. Misha responded to it in a very defensive manner, not to mention that he did it publicly. Obviously MacNN can't take any constructive criticism. They did not thank me for my suggestions or instigate any of them. The result? The ugliest most unprofessional looking Mac site around.

Good layout and great reporting and commentary.

Sure I remember the "old" macnn and I still recall the shock when I visited it for the first time after "everything" was changed.

But I can find information on this website very easily, it's not overrun by ads, and, again, the content is awesome.

This site is a keeper.

Does this affect my MacWeek subscription at all? I love getting that magazine every week There is nothing like the feel of real print, in my hands, giving me all the latest on the Mac community. I can smell the paper and the ink!!! And that Mac the Knife! What a card!!! He's hilarious. I would probably have to commit suicide if the postman stopped delivering my favorite news rag.

And yes, as an interface designer for the past several years (and a graphic designer for a few years before that), this site exhibits little in the way of visual interest OR ease of use. There are breaks between tables (where there needn't be), and the placement of ads (which MacNN can control) is extraordinarily poor. The links along the top of the page further reinforce the lack of taste and simplicity that a site such as this should embody.

What I come to MacNN for is ALL MAC NEWS. I get Davenetics in my mailbox, and check out Upside's EB for industry-wide news.

My point: I'll move along if MaCNN dilutes their Mac news with stuff I can (with proper grammar) elsewhere.

Moving to the center is almost always about $ or ego. Staying hyper-specialized isn't always profitable, but it serves a higher purpose.

better journalism please

I do hope this will result in a better standard of journalism for the site. Some "loyalists" earlier in the thread apparently found no fault with MacNN. However, their recent tendency to post email notices from Joe Six-pack without bothering to check any references (the last Quicktime 5 expiration debacle ring a bell?) clearly indicates a problem. I agree that on the whole MacNN is the best Mac news site available. That said, I'd like them to avoid losing that status. Please stick to real news from reputable sources and follow standard procedures for verifying stories (no, rumor sites an the like don't count as references).

Good luck MacNN

I have been reading MacNN now since '98. I don't know when it started but back then it had the all white interface with red letters at the top. I personally love the current look and layout. MacNN is rarely unprofessional. There have been a couple questionable links to news snippets that weren't really news worthy but I would argue that their news is quite well filtered. Just think about all the c*** they could put on the page but don't.

However, I am concerned of MacNN changing for the worse with this move. I wish the staff the best of luck with this new endeavour.

Go to the Newsfactor Network page (with the link in the "article") and grab one of the pulldown items in the upper right....Anybody remember what osOpinion used to look like? Those pulldown choices represent what used to be independent sites. Not anymore, Suzie. Now it looks like Newsfactor, with PC advertisements, and cross-site links to stuff you don't care about.

Say goodbye to the MacNN you once knew. That is the "new design" that Misha was yacking about above.

Why did MacNN join newsfactor?? That site has some of the worst articles on it. Go ahead and see for yourself swing by newsfactor and find all 17 articles that they have on the Mac. Most came from Excite or CNet, some news site to want to join up with. If this site here starts to look like newsfactor it will be the demise of this site. There are enough Excite/CNet/CNN/c*** news sites on the web, please have the mind power to continue on your own and not join newsfactor with their c*** news.

Pay attention

Get a clue if you somehow believe that MacNN will ever clutter itself with PC news and unrelated stories... or whatever. Pay attention to what the "paragraph" that you are criticizing for being too small is saying.

The layout is far from poor, as it works nicely across platforms and even with NetsCRAPe's useless browsers... If anyone else here has spent four years in college to go into professional web design and development, then by all means, speak your voice. This site is laid out nicely, has an excellent ad placement strategy, and has a simple, relatively friendly interface with about anything reachable on its front page.

Whoever maintains this site does an excellent job and I am more than sure that they would never do anything to endanger what they see as a good thing.

You make a decision to "visit" a web site. If you dislike it, don't visit it. Be aware that you are a guest, not the center of the universe.

Change can be good or bad

Thousands of loyal MacNN readers log on here every day ONLY because they like the way MacNN has been doing its job -- the selection of news, the treatment of that news and the general appearance of the pages etc. While change is not always a bad thing, messages in this list clearly suggest that many readers are fearful of what changes they might expect as a result of MacNN joining NewsFactor Network (me included). A quick look at the NewsFactor Network site (which I've never heard of) doesn't particularly impress me. It looks like a bland and rather skimpy news re-hash site that isn't particularly Mac-centric. But without more to go on, i'ts hard to make a judgement. Please give us more details MacNN.

A little note...

If one thinks about this from a logical point of view. macNN is one the the tops in publishing of Mac related information. I only say one of the tops because it is not the biggest, yet. What it comes down to is that NFN seems to want Mac coverage. The fact that they chose MacNN shows that they want unbiased and timely information. I, too am unsure what this will bring. But, instead of being a naysayer, I am going to remain upbeat and optimistic about the merger.

You have given MacNN your vote in the past and as youu are on the site viewing this right now, so give them a chance to see what happens. Everybody deserves a chance.

I'm just as wary about "mergers" or "affiliates" as a lot of the people here--I've seen plenty of mac news sites sink into oblivion after hooking up with another site. But I'm kind of sad to see just how jaded (or dumb) people can be; automatically assuming that affiliating with a news site you aren't that fond of will result in the inevitable downfall of one you are isn't exactly logical. Something to worry about, maybe, but I'm certainly not about to start casting stones until I see evidence that I should. Patience is a virtue, even when you're reading tech news.

And even if the design isn't beautiful, I can scroll through the day's stories in a minute and a half--what's wrong with that? Isn't that the point of a first stop news network?

I hope all goes well at macnn. I just hope they keep their independent view of the mac community. They were always a better alternative than macweek and they stuck in there during the worst of times. It was good to read them a few years ago when apple was really on the ropes and developers were living in fear...

My biggest gripe with Macnn is that they do not use MacOS servers to host their site... it's hard to talk their commitment to the platform seriously when they don't even have enough confidence in the OS to use it as their web server.

about the server

The Server are not MacOS based primarily for financial reasons. Show me a good Mac OS Server Set up that can handle the 12 million dynamically generated page views that MacNN gets that would cost under $5000 per machine.

That's the only reason that MacNN uses Linux. At the least you should be happy they aren't using Wintel and ASP to build the site that you all love.

MacNN has been trying to get a Web Objects site built for years, and it's their prefernce, but in this tiny of a market, it's hard to justify such an expense when there is so little revenue.

I bet it we all started clicking on all of the banners as much as we could, MacNN would go to w*** and Mac OS X as soon as they could (6 months to a year)

Um... As far as I know, Newsfactor doesn't let people "join". They buy sites, with a vested interest for the site's previous owners. I highly doubt that this deal is any different. A year from now, none of the current site managers will have any interest in this venture and will likely take their money and run. Not a bad thing, of course, just something to be aware of.

if macaddict were to give newsfactor a rating it would be freakin ugly! not like macaddict site is any better... and the design of this site - easy on the eyes. clean. not overly annoying with g** a** bannerxs. plus the forums are great to read, uncensored and easy to submit to unlike macslash. i dig this site and consider it one of my favorigte places to get info. i wish the mac gurus site could remain idependant. like what if inside mac games was bought by some dumbass site. i wouldnt be to happy. hope macnn servives.

Okay, wait a minute

MacNN could very easily run OS X Server as it is released and run the same PHP scripts they do now. Just look on MacPHP.net. They have the source and acces to precompiled solutions. There is not reason why they could not run on Mac hardware anymore. When they made the switch to Linux, this was not the case, but a lot has changed since then. Why not give it a chance MacNN? Apache with PHP on the Mac is more than powerful enough to serve MacNN.
