Omniweb to get better Flash, Java support

updated 01:45 am EDT, Thu May 10, 2001

Following our report yesterday summarizing the state of OS X's most prominent web browsers, officials from the Omni Group say that the company is working hard on support for Flash compatibility for a 4.1 release of OmniWeb, and currently have a proprietary Flash plug-in under testing. The company also says it is working to enhance Java compatibility.

    flash support sucks

I checked out just one site and then dumped the program. No matter how good they say it is, if I can't see flash displayed properely, it's losing out to explorer.

    OmniWeb is cool!

OmniWeb ist definitly the most beautiful application I've ever seen. We should be thankful for the OmniWeb team's enthusiasm in developing native osx applications.

    Hate to say it....

But if you really need a browser to perform as expected (Javascript, Flash, Java) you need to use a PC. I use onmiweb on my OSX box, IE 5.5 on my loathesome Dell.

    OmniWeb is Soooo close...

If they can just get Javascript and Flash 5 support working right, it'll be there. OS X is a great platform for Web browsers. Just look at the choices we have : IE, OmniWeb, iCab, Opera, Fizzila, and soon NS 6. Not to mention all the browsers that work under Classic.

I'd like to see Apple buy OmniWeb and give IE the heave ho. As long as Microsoft is in charge of Apple's web browsing experience, it's always going to be 2nd rate compared to the PC.

    OmniWeb & Flash

So am I the only one who doesn't want a proprietary Flash plugin from OmniWeb? Isn't the whole point to move to a standards compliant browser? If OmniWeb is developing their own plugin doesn't that defeat the purpose?

Why don't they use Netscapes plugin architecture? Isn't that what MS did with IE?

If it isn't really clear from this I'm not a big fan of OmniWeb. I have yet to find any reason (other than nice text anti-aliasing) to switch from the preview version of IE, even if IE is a little buggy.

    There'll always be tomor

OmniWeb's Flash, Java, JavaScript, international text conversion support suck NOW.

But, we Mac users all happily live in tomorrow where it WILL be just fine.
