Earthlink follows Apple to Chiat/Day

updated 01:20 pm EDT, Wed May 9, 2001

Earthlink has transferred its estimated $50 million advertising account to TBWA/Chiat/Day in what sources said was a centralization of ad duties resulting from the "alliance" between Apple and Earthlink, according to AdWeek.com. TBWA/Chiat/Day has been Apple's advertising agency of choice since the launch of its "Think Different" campaign.

Hopefully they get some cool ads out of this. The ones now are focusing on the right things (privacy), but are not very good.

    uh, actually...

Chiat/Day has been Apple's ad agency of choice since the Ridley Scott "1984" ad.

Uh, no. BBDO had the account for years before Steve came back.

    Earthlink to planet Earth

I think any change would probably be for the better. I've oftened stared in wonder at the EL's TV spots and wondered who they were trying to reach with those artsy animated ads. I remember seeing independent films from eastern Europe of the same genre back in the late 1970's. Very cool and progressive then but over the heads of people that are trying to upgrade from that ISP that suggest people use "keywords" to find anything on the net.

    Earthlink/Apple Alliance

A closer "alliance" between Apple and Earthlink would be great. Perhaps Apple could extend iTools to resemble that online service it had briefly--what was that called?-- e-something--and integrate that with Earthlink. Hmm.

    crazy idea

what with this advertising "alliance," and earthlink's horrid quarter report last quarter, do you think apple could really make "the whole widget"?

could they buy out earthlink, and then supply all new mac users with a perfectly mac-friendly, out-of-the-box experience?

is that too wacko? stranger things have happened...

    Alliance

Like the political party of the same name here in Canada, a closer "alliance" with Earthlink doesn't seem all that wise right now - you don't generally tie yourself to a sinking ship. Unless, as the poster above suggests, Apple intends to buy them out at some point when their stock crashes (like next quarter).
