Late evening tech news: the FBI has put out a denial of service warning after a DDOS attack on the White House Web site last Friday; NEC's new $3,400 "light and thin" Versa Txi notebook packs a 750MHz Pentium III, a FireWire port, three USB ports, a 12.1-inch active-matrix screen, 128MB of RAM, and a 20GB drive in a 1.26" thick magensium case that weighs in under 4lbs; and Yahoo says it will begin charging for PC-to-phone calls through its messaging service.

    3x $ for NEC?

    Leave it to NEC to put out a sub-notebook with almost the same specs of the new iBook (although a bigger hard drive and a little lighter) and then charge 3 times as much. It is nice to say that Apple has higher quality and lower prices.

    for NEC's price....

    I'll get the TiPB and iMac with money to spare.

    NEC is a failure. All Windoze notebooks are failures...... when something breaks, they're like rotten teeth in the mouth you can't extract.

    I hate magnesium casings (on the exterior) because the silver spray paint comes off after a short while, leaving behind the ugly dark blackish magnesium-alloy.....they should start selling pylox too....

    Not just NEC

    NEC's not the only one who announced a new portable this week. Dell has two as of Monday, May 7. They say the C500 targets the consumer and education markets, but their low-end model lags behind the iBook low end model in all respects but two (if you're desparate for PC card slots and an infrared port, Dell's got em). Interestingly, for the company who promised to undersell anyone in the business, Dell's priced their low-end education/consumer laptop entry at ... drumroll please, $1,559. So for an extra $260 I get infrared, PC card slots, lose 4 GB hard drive space, add weight and size, and I have to put up with Windows?

    Looks like Total Cost of Ownership isn't the only way Macs are cheaper ...

    Ugly proprietary hardware (NEC) running ugly proprietary software (Windows) at an inflated price.

    That kind of c*** should come with a government warning label.
