Evening tech news: AMD's successor to the Athlon processor, expected to ship in the second half of the year, has been named Barton; Dell will cut another 3,000 to 4,000 jobs in an effort to cut costs (the company slashed 1,700 jobs in February); and 3Com has announced it is cutting 3,000 jobs, or 30 percent of its workforce.

    gee Mike...

your strategy isn't working too well now, is it? Keep selling those boxes as cheaply as you can, too bad no one wants your c***.

I think Dell should be sold for assets to some shmucky company like Gateway. Steve could offer to buy them out, but what would the point be?

    Dell will meet...

their earnings goal now!!! I am really happy that Apple has decided not to adopt the same strategies to ensure profitability. It is really funny for all the things that people make Stevie J out to be, he has yet to retaliate against Michael Dell and Co. for the acerbic remarks they made against Apple...Hey, Mikey, we like it!!

    funny...

As one source said regarding the current PC price war,
"Dell has an hour of oxygen left, while the others have only half-an-hour of oxygen." Hmm, isn't HP offering up some complete desktop system for something like $600?

    Dell -Very Wussy

    Apple - no layoffs
    Dell - 4000 plus

And Dell is *supposed* to be the biggest PC maker!

Show some leadership, Mike and learn how to bite the bullet instead of taking it out on your workers. Letting go 4000 is not the smart move. Showing some creativity and guts is the way to go...

Methinks Mikey should take a lesson or two from Stevie

    No retaliation?

Actually SJ did retaliate (in a rather cool way) when that stuffed shirt Michael Dell opened his mouth about Apple last time. On C/Net's pages (somewhere!) there's a quick movie (RM or WMP, of course) of Steve speaking at the new iBook's release. At one point he says that "Michael Dell has made some pretty disparaging remarks about Apple lately. We're not going to get into that here, but let's take a look at Dell's latest laptop". He then proceeds to compare the weight, size and spec of the black Dell to the iBook and at the end says" Well, I don't think I need to say any more. It's all black and white". It sounds kind of crummy written down, but his timing was great as was his delivery of the punch line - Nice going! On a more serious note, I agree with whoever it was said that it's a good job that Apple didn't listen to idiots like Michael and give the shareholders their money back. Maybe he should keep his mouth shut in future to reduce the risk of him putting his foot in it.

    RE: No Retaliation?

I saw what you're referring to and it is actually posted on Apple's site as well...I would consider that a mini retaliation, but nothing on par with the attack from Mike and Co.

Steve will not step to their level...Instead of blindly attacking a company, he uses actual product comparison, visually and statistically...Yeah, Apple screwed up, and Steve admits it...But that doesn't mean they aren't trying to amend this...You know, Dell keeps cutting jobs like this, and soon there will be 1 employed Dell worker for every iBook sold to Henrico County School District.

Hey, s**** renaming the iBook...what about renaming Dell?? How does Dull sound?
