I realize that these are just now shipping but has anyone heard if possible to purchase 3rd party dvd or dvd/cdrw drives for this rather than getting gouged by Apple's upgrade pricing?

iBook Shipping

Am a purchasser buying direct from apple, i was told it was always thier intention to ship for the first week of thier new financal quarter - starting Mon 7th May

The Delay was just there as a back up to save them selves if problems, or lots of orders like the Ti PB

It's gonna feel a little poky compared to a desktopG4 - no altivec and the Rage mobility isn't gonna help Aqua much..... but if my 300mhz Wallstreet is serviceable (and it is) the iBook2 should be.

My Powerbook G3/233 rocks and rolls with MacOS X. You just haven't installed X right on those machines it feels poky on...turn off Java on the Carbon web browsers, as the Java just isn't ready for primetime. Learn how to speed up X by installing X right:

Airport cards...

I don't know if BTO models with Airport cards come with the card already built in, but either way, you're loading work on Apple people, which you could reduce if you would buy the card elsewhere.

the "save money" was related to the RAM and harddisk, I think. Which is true. I'm gonna buy 128MB from my local dealer for 115 sfr. About 60$. The RAM isn't very cheap here in Switzerland. But it's the best Mac country, at least here in Europe.

Also, about BTO...you would save money buying the HD and RAM elsewhere. You can easily find a 20GB 2.5" ATA/66 for about $130 (StreetPrices.com Search Results). The Apple BTO upgrade from 10 to 20 is $200, however buying a third-party HD affords you several benefits:
* if it fails, take the hard drive back to where you bought it instead of sending your whole iBook back to Apple.
* if it fails you have a 10GB backup drive (bootable, and no doubt preloaded with all the standard Apple software as well)
* for $100 or $150 (USB or FireWire respectively) you can buy a 2.5" hard drive enclosure and stick that 10GB in it for a total of 30GB storage.

Personally though, when it comes to hard disks, I'd rather get it through Apple and KNOW what I'm getting. The Apple HDs are 5400rpm ATA/66 drives whereas the majority of drives you will find elsewhere are 4200rpm.

Who says the drives are 5400 RPM? I just assumed they are 4200, as just about all the third-party ones are, and I seriously doubt Apple is having them specially made or something. Where'd you get that info from?

I'm not sure why people would want to upgrade the ibooks with Apple stuff.

One of the vendors on DealNN has iBook 256mb RAM for $73, and you can get an IBM 20GB 9.5" hard drive for less than $125. So for less than $200, you get can both, where on the Apple BTO, you couldn't get either. (of course, if the HD is as hard to install as on the old iBook, that would be a problem for most people. )

Of course, I'd recommend an external firewire drive anyway... if something should happen to your internal drive, it's good to have a backup. For about $250, you should be able to get at least a 30GB model.

5400 RPM

Apple really says the drives are 5400 rpm. I didn't believe it either! If you go to the Apple store, select iBook, go to Customize, and then select "More info" next to the hard drive option, it explicitly says that both the 10 and 20GB hard drives are Ultra ATA, 5400 rpm.

The same information for the TiBook indicates that those drives are only 4200 rpm.

My pet theory is that they just recycled an old "More info" page from the iMacs or something. Amost tempted to by an iBook, and if it comes with a 4200 rpm drive sue Apple for misrepresentation. But I wouldn't do that to my favorite fruity computer company.

On a side note, with the iBooks, it may be best to order a bigger drive direct from Apple. If the iBook2 is anything like iBook1, changing the hard drive is not a trivial process. On iBook1, authorized service providers wouldn't even service the hard drive - they would send the computer back to Apple since getting into the drive requires taking apart the greater part of the computer.

I guess it depends on your ordering. I am getting a CD-RW iBook w/ AirPort for around $2300 with taxes and shipping and some other things. That's educational. AirPort cars are cheaper and so are bases through the eudcational discount, and I am a student. Why pay $1600 for the iBook alone with 128MB RAM from anywhere else and AirPort when I can get it from Apple cheaper with more options? You guys need to think about the -target- market --- this is being sold to College students who don't have money, and can't afford to repair the things. This machine has to last me the next 3 years -at least-.

Airport card $99?

Well in the UK that equates to about �80, BUt i got one free! yes free!

Last September whne the paris iBook was fresh in the apple store window I went to the small independent mac show in london and bought a Graphite iBook, airport card and bass station from a mail order dealer. they promised me that the iBook would be with me within a week. Alas apple had different ideas... and it took 6 weeks to arrive... any how this made me mad, i complained and they gave me a 128mb ram upgrade free to keep me sweet! so 192 ram, top sepc iBook, and �100 pounds of the purchase price cos they were pledging to beat any price at the small expo.

Then once the iBook arrives they say they have no airport cards... most annoyed that after so long i have airport bass station and iBook, and no airport card i cancel my order for the airport card, they refund the money, i go buy a card from a local retailer, Helas (john lewis) in reading, for those of you in the UK, and i buy an airport card, instlal it and happily surf wirelessly. 3 weeks later, and much to my delight an airport card turns up! no charge for it! so it sits in my cupboard for 6 months... until my mum gets her TiBook (from work) so she installs it in that, buys another bass station so i have airport in my home and at my uni flat. cool!

1 - $2300
2 - cheaper than $1600

Personally I would go with #2 and rationalize the $2300 quote by saying it was a TYPO, ever heard of such a thing? It does happen and NO, these things aren't always proofread for accuracy. So maybe he meant $1300, YOU THINK?

I just went to Apple's education store and tried to configure a similar iBook. For an iBook with a CD-RW drive, AirPort card, 128MB RAM, 10GB HD, and AirPort base station. It ended up being $1,926.00 before tax and shipping. If the person bought software or more RAM the price could be right.

Just so you know, students save about $5 on AirPort cards and $18 on AirPort base stations.

Also, think about how education institutions by stuff: PAPERWORK. Lots of it: purchase orders, purchase vouchers, recieving reports, etc. Buying a base iBook from the AppleStore, then going to Crucial for RAM, and the campus computer store for an AirPort card might be a bit cheaper monetarily, but that savings is more than offset by the wages of those who have to do the paperwork. So, it often is cheaper OVERALL to get it all from Apple.
Now, as for the AirPort card or other BTO options that are available by themselves at the AppleStore, those we DO order separately on the same order, and install ourselves. It's a tradeoff between dollar cost, paperwork, and speed. Buying separately is cheaper, buying from one place is less paperwork, and buying stock configs is fastest. When we ordered one of our Pismos for work, we got the standard config PowerBook and and Airport card as seperate items on the same order to avoid BTO delay and cut paperwork; we got extra RAM for it as part of our next purchase from the campus computer store, along with ink and toner.
The key is to buy as much stuff as you can on one order, in the stock configs, and then install extras yourself.

What's the problem with using a three year old Mac, all the guy is saying it's got to last him through college, not that it's going to be a hot rod all that time!?

FWIW I have a PB5300 that's around 5 years old I still use it from time to time, although I have access to a Wall Street if I want to lug the thing around! I currently have a B&W G3 which is coming up to two years old, and I don't feel the inclination to buy a new one - it replaced a Quadra 950 that i'd been using for the previous 5-6 years.

So, I don't see any problem with three years.

I don't quite understand why anyone would consider the educational pricing at Apple a good deal. If you purchase from Outpost.com here are the numbers.

iBook CD-RW 1595.00 (this includes 128mb free extra memory. Total 256 Mb.
No rebate. no install charge)
Airport Card 99.00

Total 1694.00

As of today (5/7/01) they currently have free ground shipping (check the site) and no tax for most states.

*And* if you go through a rebate site, you could get $50.82 back.

If I were still a student I would not throw my money away at Apple.com. I would have to wait a litte while longer--so what, that extra $650 could help pay the rent.

Someone was asking about running Mac OS X on this machine. I'm sure it would run, providing you have plenty of ram (256MB i'd say). Additionally, that mobo is still at 66Mhz).

replacing components

I'm also eagerly awaiting my new ibook, 256K, combo drive chicklet. I use both Mac and Windows PCs, but after reading the features and value proposition of the new ibook, I lunged for my credit card. I join you all waiting impatiently.

I'm pretty handy under the hood, but it's been a while since I've replaced components inside a Mac. Is there a good web information resource for selecting third-party hard drives, formatting and loading a new OS on a third-party drive? I'm all ears.

i was pleased to get that message from apple that my iBook had shipped. of course i figured i had over 3 weeks to tell my wife i just bought one! guess i better tell her soon? similar to the os x shipping though, they upgraded me to fedex from UPS for free! also, this iBooks are being drop shipped directly from Taiwan. is this normal?

At least Apple can show the reliable announcement to its' customers. It does not like the previous products such as PowerBook G4 and PowerMac 667 Mhz that the customers must wait at least 2 months after the product announcement

OS X

OS X runs on almost ANY G3. I've run it on two so far a *366* ibook and a 400 iMac. Both ran OK (iMac ran with PB, iBook with final) both machines only had 192mb Ram. The people who say that they probably need 256mb to run OS X on a G3 are just plan wrong. People have even run on 64mb. If Apple says you need 128, you need 128 to run efficently. I can't wait for the new iBook so I can upgrade. I'd love to have a 500. It would definily ROCK...

Yes, my TiBook shipped from TAOYUAN CITY TW, new iBooks are shipping from there as well.

Battery is already fully charged! Beeyootiful in every way. I haven't felt this oozy since my 140. I never want to drop this one. The glossy hard plastic case shows fingerprints. How do you open the damn disk tray?

Rebate Site?

Someone mentioned about 15 messages back that you could get about $50 back by going through a rebate site. What site is that?

I'm going to order my shiny new ibook on Monday and want to get the best deal. btw, I completely agree ... ordering from a retailer means big savings and so much less hassel. I think the dvd option is pretty good for $200 bucks more (get that 128 extra megs of ram too!) but as for the other bells and whistles, there are better deals to be had!

CD-RW, R.I.P.?

A customer service rep at Outpost just told me that Apple has decided to stop manufacturing the CD-RW icebook. He said they're committed to honoring extant orders (like mine; he says Outpost is expecting a shipment of 65 CD-RW Icebooks any day). But henceforth the available options will be CD-ROM, DVD, and Combo drive.

Kind of makes me want to say, Heck with it, gimme a combo drive. But they haven't got those in stock either, so I might as well wait. I'm used to it. My order went in May 6.
